By image... I mean just a jpg file for the ad. And a Google Analytics UA tracking code number. That's what the client passed on to me from their advertiser. Like wtf?

    • I've always only dealt with specific ad network tracking scripts; and that typically doesn't involve a Google Analytics UA number.evilpeacock
    • If it was me, I'd think someone on the client's end was new and didn't understand the medium.evilpeacock
    • Thanks. My thoughts too. Glad their is some consensus. I just didn't want to come back with a response before double-checking.ETM

when you say an image i'm assuming you mean an html image tag? it depends on the agreement or IO and what either of those stipulate a publisher must provide to the advertiser in terms of campaign exposure.

but maybe i'm not understanding your role in this or your client's

tracking is usually performed with a script, iframe, image, or a server to server postback and will vary based on what exactly you're tracking (impression, click, conversion, etc) and who's looking to track those actions.

    • ehh, disregard. just realized you're talking about google analytics not ad campaign tracking.SteveJobs

So not a single person here does this stuff? :(

Sorry, to further clarify, the "them" I refer to means the client's advertiser, not the client.

Firstly, I personally don't do a lot in the online ad space. But I am helping out a client.

Usually their advertisers provides just an image file, which we track using GA custom events, or they provide their own embed code from whatever platform they use.

Today I got an ad image file with just their GA number and no explanation.

Is this common? What am I to do with it? I know I can run multiple trackers, but I'm not giving them access to all the site stats and they are only advertising in one section, though our GA is implemented globally. Can I implement something page level or should I just say no?
