This might interest you. It's possible to have a suite of versions of a logo for different formats. A detailed one for large formats, simpler one for every day applications, a small/basic one for small use etc.
In each of these typography needs to be considered in relation to the scale the logo will be used at.I think this site of responsive logo concepts might be worth looking at:
- Think about what you could lose from the logo in terms of detail while still communicating the essence (anchor & lighthouse)BaskerviIle
- ^ Listen to him Beeswax, he knows. I know I'm paying attention.oey
- Definitely, but good luck getting a university to sign that shit off.set

- Very cool way to demonstrate the different variationsMiguex
- are these actual responsive logos, or did this designer create them as a side project?Gnash

- 3rd Chanel is f'woefuldetritus
- in answer. i don't really care in the execution of the exercise here, it serves its purpose in context.detritus
- This is great but was it not just called "lockups" before?Mattjanz3n
- @detritus yeah, that 3rd Chanel became a HANELKrassy
- I doubt that's in their brand guidelinesset

Initial reactions:
– Not sure where this logo would live, but the scale of type and detail in the illustration is too delicate (especially the ribbon text)
– There's no need for the thin key lines around everything, they'll be invisible in most applications
– Think about the arrangement of the university name. A split with 'Palos Verdes' at the top and 'University' at the bottom might read better. It's tough for the eye to start and finish reading at the bottom of the a circle
– Would be nice if the anchor locked in with the circle form a bit more.

Is this your first logo project?

- This one seems to be the most contained to me. When reproduced small though that little type will disappear.capn_ron
- This one but agree with above points.Hayzilla
- yep type will never work at small sizes, make that much bigger in central area.fadein11
- Something that I do that may help is to create the logo only using black and white , no grayscale. It helps to simplify sometimes. Agree with the above points.Morning_star
- the light beams are much more efficients in this version. for the little types, who do really care ? think about the brazilian flag as an emoji !gonzalle
- may be the beams could be flat. no gradients.gonzalle

For a logo... too much detail and too many colours, in my opinion...
- it is a little bit kitchen sink-y, i'll agreehans_glib
- agreed ... but for a college/university seal, it's about the right amount of business, it's just not legible enoughmonospaced

If you're committed to the anchor-lighthouse fusion you need to make the beams of light solid. I'd also make the background a single colour (darker the better) to avoid implying the light is on during the day (and the sky/land/shore/sea really isn't needed anyway, but you could knock out some vvv vvv stylized waves if you really wanted).

Way to delicate.
The type in the middle doesn't even render well in .jpg. It will never print well and will bleed. The main name type is too light and thin. The details of the lighthouse are lost. The gradient of the lightbeams will not print.
If this is a college logo, it needs to be able to be embroidered, it needs to be able to be silkscreened.
The lighthouse also looks really small in the circle.
Here's some help:
- all of thismonospaced
- it also needs to work in 1-colormonospaced
- yep all v.true. a nice logo to look at but in real world application a nightmare.fadein11

There is a lot going on in the logo still. I reccomend you break away from illustrator and hand sketch the elements. You’ll find you dont need things like the shadow on the lighthouse, the point on the anchorx the outer barb points of the anchor, possibly even the seascape if you make a dark, starry sky.
You might consider getting rid of the anchor element entirely and solming in on a really nice lighthouse. Logos dont tend to shoulder too many subjects at once very well.

On conceptual level - you're client will be happy. You have many conceptual elements that tie in nicely.
Execution wise - I think it's too complex and need to simplify the linework to make it work in a more flexible way. That is easier said than done!

^ cannon has a point (ha). Losing that point may allow you to move "university" to the bottom and to give the name of the uni more presence - which it needs, i think
- cannonball19780
Anchor doesnt need to be pointed on bottom
- I agree; something more akin to https://iconmonstr.c… has potential especially with your lighthouse/light illustration; perhaps a touch msimplified?!ideaist
- Fax_Benson0
ditch the background and the ribbon completely for now and focus on the lighthouse, anchor and type, in B+W. You've made a solid start with those.
basically what everyone else said.
- Projectile1
Definitely don't have the light beams or anchor interfering with the type.
Simplify/bold up the lighthouse. Esp. the criss cross lines and windows - they do make it look prison-like
Fatter type
Like the shadow effect, maybe try a bit of it on the arrows of the anchor
Can the slogan be gotten rid of or maybe put onto the anchor?
I think the brown colour also helps the prison feel
Lighthouse shorter so it doesn't mess with the type.

Overall I think #1 has legs and I agree with the comments above.
Font and font weight need to be addressed.
The anchor is throwing me off. I don't care for the triangle points. Perhaps explore something a bit more like this...I'd try and simplify the lighthouse top a bit as well.
Good luck and great first round!

Try green instead of brown. Looks like a desert island.
