- Thanks but I need a storage solution. For final broadcast ready files.Centigrade
- ProRes is an industry standard, and it does tagging and searching like you're asking for.fate
- Cool. I'll take a deeper dive.Centigrade
- OH hmmm they only offer 400gb at 135 per month. These guys would blow this limit out of the water.Centigrade
- Contact them for enterprise - you'll have a chance to negotiate what you need and get a much better deal. There's always a volume discount.bulletfactory

adobe bridge?
- I suggested this a long time ago. It needs to be browser (offsite) accessible. I even suggested dropbox pro.Centigrade

I will say the real kicker is informing the client of the realities of data storage like this. Each video is 4gb and they have hundreds scattered all over different hard drives and servers. So it makes sense to centralize them. However they don't get that 4gb really equals 8gbs if you count offsite backup. And then they need to know about on going physical maintenance on top of the software stack. Plus you don't want people having to stream the HD version online... they should be served a low-res version .... which is more storage...
Why can't they just put everything on a RAID drive setup or server as a backup and use Vimeo Pro to serve files. That to me is cost effective and relatively simple.
- maintenance will be a bitch
for starters calculate with
4-6 months / disk in heavy video production...sted

Free / open source digital asset management that you can run on a local network or wherever:
I've been using this for many years, works great as long as you put the time into tagging and describing your content.

Companies I know don't use any offsite solutions to store their production data so i can understand, just the archives. Currently the largest one I know is a post-production company 4cut.hu they have a contractor for the hw maintenance and backups, and developed an asset management software 3 years ago. they're using a 7.2pb rack as their local storage in this way:
masters storage (4petabytes+externals)
production storage (revisions 2petabytes+externals)
published storage (1pb for low-res footages, metadata, client low-res previews, inernets 100mbit output)production live storage (4tb/station)
this stuff is more than 2k/month just think about replacing the broken disks every month, and whatever you do the bandwidth of the internal network is critical.
