    Worth a £20 try for you guys with tinnitus.
    Also for people without tinnitus it seems too, these help to take away the edge from sounds that would normally 'alarm' and 'stress' us which in turn should make us calmer.

    I've had tinnitus all my life. something like 30 years ago i experienced head trauma and became deaf in my right ear, the other sparked tinnitus.. older i get the louder it seems and now that i have a child, it totally gets worse the more stress i become.

    I've suffered from tinnitus in my left ear since a fairly loud New Year event a few years ago, when my partner and her best chum insisted in shouting into my ear every time they wanted to talk, which given we were all a little high on E was all fucking night. I spent the entire evening protesting that they shut the fuck up a little, to no avail.

    For the first few months it was incredibly bad and I was seriously pissed off at how it had arisen. Given time my brain gradually tuned it out most of the time, but sometimes it'd flare up again.

    Strange thing is, ever since I was a kid I've felt like it was impossible to ever hear perfect silence. Being a country kid, I remember when there was no wind or noise about and the quieter it got the more a certain pitched tone would kick in to fill in the void. I suspect it's a natural response to silence - some sinal proessing trick, aggregating a white noise to enable better pick up of discrete noises, or something. Tinnitus is that response, broken.

    Blood pressure might have something to do with forms of it too. I know I get a different type of tinnitus if I've been slouching around for a while and I can 'feel' blood pumping around my ears, resulting in a lower toned form.

    Also - and the reason (finally) I'm responding here now - my case of tinnitus has ramped up massively these last few days, as a direct result of swimming and, I presume, air pressure changes from flying. It's been a long time, you cunt. Not happy to hear you again.

    In my right ear, I developed an 'apparent' form of tinitus.

    I can hear my pulse which sounds like walking on fresh snow in that goes in time with my heartbeat.

    It's never ending, gets louder when I'm stressed and drives me insane and worst of all makes me want to go snowboarding :(

    I had a mastoidectomy replacing the infected anvil, stirrup and hammer in both ears with prosthetic ones. Since then I've had tinnitus.

    To be fair, I can only hear the loud ringing when I turn the music off.

    Apparently it's caused by damaging the tiny hairs in the inner ear.

    90% of the problem with tinnitus is in noticing it.

    Sorry, not much use, I'm sure - try and distract yourself: turn off the computer and go walk the streets, or something?

    Yup. I've had it in my left ear for 13-14 years now, and I think it's creeping into my right ear. The past few months have been bad, with rare times that I'm not aware of it.

    My brother has bad tinnitus, to the point that with any quiet he has a white noise machine or headphones for white noise tracks from his phone. He goes nuts over long periods as he says it can seem incredibly loud. The theory is nerve damage from a very botched wisdom tooth extraction.

    I get a ringing from time to time when it's quiet and it's actually from muscle tension. Releasing tension in my jaw and/or neck reduces or eliminates it. I'm told that this is not actual tinnitus.

    So maybe for some, try stress/tension relief and see if that helps.

    I've always been very interested by tinnitus, having noticed as a child that I could never hear 'perfect silence' - the quieter it got, the more I would hear a quiet but constant high-pitched whine. Given I lived in the far off countryside, it got pretty unquiet-quiet.

    On top of that I'd get genuine tinnitus on occasion and would be interested by the fact i ciould hear a TV in a far off room whereas few else could.

    My poor Dad gets it pretty bad and has tried lots - I think he's had, like nbq above, some relief from white noise generators.

    This makes sense to me.

    As a species, we grew up near forests or oceans, sources of types of white-ish noise that we'd've evolved to grow up near, with whatever resultant impact on hearing that might have.

    Given we have insulated houses and cars and headphones only pumping in certain frequency ranges, it makes sense to me that our brains and eardrums could be over-compensating and getting shit wrong.

    As i say, the biggest thing with it it having it drive your focus towards itself.

    Every time I've had a bad bout of tinnitus I've ended up simply realising a while after that it's gone, and I've no idea how or when it happened, other than I know I'd forgotten about is somewhere along the line.
