not totally bad, not totally amazing.
I prefer Wired.com i think, even if it feels a little bit crushed in the center, would be better if they used more horizontal space.
- true, wired column layout does a great jobfairbaken
- Christ, I've not visited Wired in aaaaagesdetritus
- Agreed. Works fine on desktop and mobile; doesn't make me want to never come back to the site. 2016 website success.section_014

I actively dislike the friendly, touchy-feely, names they give to the systems used to scrape your info and vomit their advertisements into your eyeballs.

They've made non-content even bigger and made the site even slower than itw as already, probably due to bigger non-essential content and additional advertising shit.
.
I've always been anti-ad-blockers as I appreciate the need for the sites I visit to make an income... however, the contemporary web's getting to the point where if I open two or three instances of 'certain' websites, my browser just locks up for multiple seconds, waiting for bullshit multiples of probably overlapping ad-networks to fill my screen with shite.
I think the Verge has just added itself to that list.
- Someone did a test comparing how much data it took to open a regular Verge page against one with adblock. The difference was in the MB's. Fuck them.face_melter
- All sites do shit like this these days - i was just earlier moaning about arstechnica, which uses a 2mb jpg for a 100px-wide author shot..detritus
- .. http://arstechnica.c… (it's probaly a mistake, but still - a fucking obvious one )detritus
- it's a shame b/c it's leading to the demise of editorial sites. Visits are down so ads increase, new users abandon b/c of shitty adswhatthefunk

somehow I believe Tim Cook is involved in the redesign ...
jk jk- The Apple Watch thing they did a while back was hilarious - their Editor-in-Chief is a massive fuckface.face_melter

fun fact of the day:
The verge means the penis in french

The header takes up a huge amount of the screen on a 13' laptop. Seems like a waste of space.
- ********-1
i don't know if I like it yet.

Yuck.

I agree with the comment about long page load time. These editorial sites are trying to find the balance between programatic and sponsored ads and that's leading to progressive uses of ad viewability and engagement practices. Larger ads that are sticky cause a ton of load issues.
Having worked for a ton of large editorial websites it's all about mobile, ads and article pages now b/c the majority of traffic comes sideways from social and users visit one page and then bounce. All they care about now is the ad experience and so little effort is going into the design of these blog type sites b/c these templates need to accommodate like 4,000 ad units and different ad partners.
Sad state of the editorial world when you'll find the ad experience to be far more engaging than the article content users are attempting to read.

The homepage reminds me of Stranger Things. Lol.
I do like the tweaked logo though.

It's the "stranger things' of news sites.
