So I guess you gotta have a smartphone to use these? I was hoping to get my folks one, something to help them see how useful it can be to just ask to play a song, but they are still resistant on the phone thing to maybe a little premature. Oh well, seems fun.
- really? I thought you just needed wifidbloc
- oh, I don't know really, the reviews start with "Alexa tells you to download the app"formed
- Aren't they self-contained? The apps are loaded into the devices' system and add functionality. Maybe you need an app for initial setup.face_melter
- yeah I don;t think a smartphone is needed. It's standalonedbloc

I've got an Alexa at home and I like it. It's pretty good right now but the potential is pretty exciting; when Sonos finally get their official partnership up and running next year it'll be brilliant.
I've written a review of it on this tech website:

Got it. Love it.
I have a couple lights connected to it that I turn on and off. Also, a new release allows my smoke/CO, and Environment monitors in the house can interact with it as well. Every day I ask what the weather will be, traffic, play some music. It's also damn awesome for cooking. Setting timers is ridiculously easy and cool.
You also get a rundown of all the requests via the app. Its a pretty funny rundown of who's asking what.
Alexa...
What's the weather like today?
Traffic?
Play some chill music
How big is my butt?
Tell me a knock knock joke
Set a timer for 10 minutes
Do you have a butt?
Tell me a joke
How do you spell ass?
Is it going to rain tomorrow?
Can you see my butt?
Tell me a fart joke
(spot the difference between my 7yo and me)
Probably harder than you think btw.

I just bought one. Really like it. Sits in the bedroom. Alarm clock, news etc.
I can see the potential and it seems to be getting more and more useful.
We live in a rural place and with amazon prime and 1 day delivery it's great.
The funny thing is that once you start using a voice interface everything else seems stupid.
PS you can do the set up fro a website too. You don't need a smart phone.

Kingkong, you're in the UK right? Have you got the shopping functions working yet?

Google home is still only pre-order at the moment. I've heard good things about Alexa but have yet to buy. Our place is too small to justify such a device hahaha

I have an Echo and love it. Disclaimer: Bezos signs my paycheck. But still...it's great. I can't weigh in on Google Home as I haven't tried it.
