Anchored in the late ’70s Bronx hip-hop and disco scenes, “The Get Down” has a deep respect for the innovations it’s portraying—and the pioneers responsible for those breakthroughs. Instead of plundering the legacies of the icons who hover at the edges of a show whose central characters are fictional, Luhrmann brought on Nas, Grandmaster Flash, and Kurtis Blow as producers. The director’s long list of consultants features legendary rappers, dancers, and graffiti writers—plus Herc himself.Meet the legendary graffiti artists who inspired ‘The Get Down’

Terrible.
- 1st episode showed real promise but downhill from there... like a lot of these series. The real talent director is put up front directing one episode (as perfadein11
- vinyl) and then let loose amongst directors not quite ready to handle a complex series. Script issues as well - the usual filler to pad out episodes because thefadein11
- core storyline probably isn't 'commercial enough' in the eyes of the moneymen - real shame.fadein11

Watched the first three episodes last night and while it's a coming of age hip hop story the way they handle the birth of djing, rapping, bboying and graffiti along with the entire hip hop culture along side disco during the 70's is great. The fact that the episodes so far are all close to an hour long works for me too, there's a lot going on.
- I'm at little concerned about the disco. It's always a danger with the 70s. There's just never any excuse for it.CyBrainX

Watched episode 1 last night and thought it was pretty good.
I've got a mate who's a real hip hop head and on that kind of forum too and he was saying it was cheesey and slating it from what he was reading about it on the forums but had never watched it.
From the first episode it seemed to me like a cross between Car Wash, Wild Style, maybe a bit of Warriors and those narrated video skits on the GTA games.
It is what it is and it's about as authentic as you can get for something to run on a mainstream channel like Netflix.
If you like a bit of old skool hip hop but your better half doesn't, there's enough in there with the love story and characters to keep her interested. A decent netflix n chill to keep everyone happy.

its awful.
The constant quick cuts gave me a headache.

I want to see it too, but not feeling the trailer, unlike wildstyle or warriors, it looks too polished, should have been grittier and shot in a late 70's style.
- Someone, somewhere, made the comment that it is like Glee but with hip-hop.face_melter

I liked it. Episode one ended with a high note.

I've got a bit of an obsession with that era, love wild style, Warriors, taxi driver, Saturday night fever, loved the docs style wars and rubble kings, love the bridge is over, love the message, love most early hip hop, shit I even love the intro to welcome back kotter, things from my early childhood in that time and place are ingrained in my brain something about the streets, the dirty streets and all the grime and chaos that went with it.
Saw one episode of this show and its a distilled version of all that, glee with hip hop as has been mentioned, the actors never lived it so they can't comprehend it or project it, they just dress up in Afros and bell bottoms to try and look the part but they're more Jayden smith than kool herc.
Needs more realism, closer to city of god I'd say.
