Don't venture to far out from New Orleans. You might get lynched in red neck country (aka) The Deep South.

One of my favorite cities in the US. If you get a chance, see if you can be around for a 2nd line parade on Esplanade and in/around the Treme neighborhood. Go all the way up and check out the City Park too, it's really amazing and huge and great for people watching.
Walk around and do some touristy stuff in the French Quarter, but please make time to explore beyond it. I found the Garden District really interesting, for example. Obviously get the required beignet and muffaletta sandwich at some point, but also try to get a fancy dinner, like at Peche, or even Commander's Palace.
I wish I were there now!
- prepare for your digestive system to take a hit though, because it's easy to eat really heavy foods that you might not be used tomonospaced
- Johnny's has a good dressed beef po' boymonospaced

One of my favorite cities too. Already made a reservation for Peche (went last time and loved it). Also made one for Superior Seafood and Brennan's for brunch. May do a bike city tour. Staying in the Warehouse District and will definitely be going to the Garden District too. Hopefully Treme too. We're going Monday - Wednesday so hopefully there will be a second line to see. We only have a little over 48 hours but we'll pack it in. And definitely doing Luke for happy hour — $0.50 oysters!

Anyone do one of those bike tours? Worth it? Seems like a good way to see areas outside the French Quarters.
Also, any cool shops/museums? The WWII looks pretty nice. Definitely want to check out City Park.
- I took a food walking tour of the Fr District on my first trip there, and it was a great way to see areas and eat all kinds of things. Bikes might be cool too.monospaced

Pretty sure we have a couple of New Orleans threads you should definitely look at for more info. I lived in NOLA for 8 years, and I went back for Mardi Gras this year and ate *the best meal of my LIFE* at Commander's Palace.
Commander's Palace.
Commander's Palace.

Tried scouring the older threads but most were about Katrina and less about visiting. I was looking at Commander's Palace. I know it's an institution and have been meaning to go. That good, huh? What'd you get?
- I wasn't really into the turtle soup, but the prawns in pepper jelly were incrediblemonospaced
- That does sound pretty tasty. I could probably do without the turtle soup though.CincodeMayo
- turtle soup is famous, but i had another creamy crab soup that was stellar, and gulf fish wrapped in fried shoestring potatoes that i couldn't fucking believesarahfailin

commander's palace is a little overkill IMO (jacket-required) - i like that you get to walk through the kitchen on the way to your table, but the truth is that it is damn near impossible to have a meal in new orleans that you don't just totally love.
try the Cochon Butcher (skip the restaurant, do the butcher next door), go to Drago's and get chargrilled oysters (single best bite of food in the city), have a jazz brunch at Arnaud's, definitely get beignets at Cafe du Monde, late night eats at Coop's place, lunch on fridays at Mr B's is amazing and martini's are only $1
I like to art walk around Jackson Square and Royal St., I like to people watch on Bourbon St (go to Club 635 and walk past the band up the stairs and you can get on balcony), I mostly spend my time around lower Decatur (Molly's at the Market), lower Esplanade, and Frenchman st.
also take a walk along the riverfront - great place to smoke a joint (marijuana is now decriminalized in nola)
stroll thru the french market
one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world, the Faubourg Marigny, has one of the best coffee shops in the world called Flora (at Royal & Franklin) - across the street is Mimi's a great neighborhood bar
Enjoy!
- +1 Cochon
+1 Dragos
-1 Arnaud's (tourist trap)
+1 Cafe du Monde
+10 Mr. B'ssarahfailin - look for other champagne jazz brunches and you'll find them. the jazz brunch is a monument to new orleanian genius.sarahfailin
- Yes Cochon was good. I got the fried alligator and the Cochon.monospaced
- Uhmm... you now owe money to Prince's crackhead sister, they've copyrighted the Color Purple.********
- +1 Cochon

Awesome...thanks monospaced, sarahfailin and bliznutty. Gonna check out as many of these places as I can!

Any of you guys been to Superior Seafood? Thinking of going their our first night to introduce the wife to New Orleans food – oysters, crab, alligator, gumbo, etc. We like seafood a bit more than meat (I think Cochon might be too meaty for us).
Any other recs for a place like this or is Superior Seafood pretty good? Someone suggest Jack Dempsey's but the online reviews make it sound unsanitary (dust all over, rats/roaches running around).
Going to Lüke for happy hour before. And Peche the second night for dinner.
- Superior is omg AMAZING! Get the bacon wrapped shrimp. They also have best margarita in town (add gm & amaretto)bliznutty
- Parkway Bakery was always my favorite spot for poboys. off the beaten path for tourists, since it's in midtown. i've never been to superior seafood, sadly!sarahfailin
- if you like oysters, you can really get your fill in new orleans. http://nola.eater.co…sarahfailin
- Superior has a special with oysters for $0.50 per oyster. that's a lot of oysters for you!sarahfailin
- I know! Lüke also had $0.50 oysters when I was there 3 years ago but I think they raised it to $0.75. So good though. A bargain compared to LA.CincodeMayo

Don't forget Jacques-Imo's uptown! they have a casual atmosphere but bonkers-good, authentic cajun/creole food. Probably my most favorite spot.
