I'm just looking for some advice from any QBNers with experience in Spain... the Spanish Embassy in Australia put out some openings for short volunteering trips to Spain, for which I have been accepted for a couple of months in 2017.
I've been asked for some preferences for places that I wouldn't mind being going to, with Madrid, Murcia, Extremadura, La Rioja and Andalusia the provinces being allocated first.
As I'll be going for the volunteering, the language skills, the sightseeing and hopefully some cycling, would any of you guys perhaps have any tips on super-boring areas you'd suggest I avoid, or kickass places I absolutely must see?
Cheers in advance :)

Can't go wrong with Madrid or Barcelona for the food, drink and culture. Have been through both a few times. I don't know the small towns worth a damn.

Check out Galicia, Sevilla

Sevilla keeps on coming up in various place I've looked as a good spot, I think I'll put my name down there. Google says summer peak temp there can be a scorching 47ºC (116ºF) in July/August, thankfully I'll be gone by then!
Thanks for everybody's input ;)

Been to the north several times. Absolutely love it. Bilbao, San Sebastian, Santander... Great for roadtripping. If you like to surf and are a pussy like me, bring your thickest wetsuit. And all the rest OBBTKN will tell you I guess. Enjoy.

Skip madrid. Andalusia / Sevilla is pretty amazing. I would live there if I could.
You can head to granada and other neighboring spots as well.

Sevilla is much hotter than the neighbouring south coast, I think I remember reading it was the warmest city in Europe.

Grenada is somewhere I always love going back to. So beautiful!
Mardrid was another city, Barcelona to. Both great cities... but Sevilla and Grenada just feel more.. Spanish I guess

Extremadura is a flat featureless expanse. Not sure what would be attractive there.
Granada & Bilbao would be my two recommendations (awkwardly, given they're at opposite ends of the country), and although I've not myself been, everyone who's ever been recommends Barcelona.
My folks live in Andalucia so it's a place close to my heart and, where food's concerned, belly. Tarifa's chilled and has a vaguely Oz-like scene, beautiful beaches sea sports and a stunning view of Africa, across the straits.
Personally I'd not bother with Madrid, but I hear it's come on leaps and bounds in recent years.
- If I ever go back to the Basque Country, I'll be knocking on OBBTKN's door, whether he likes it or not :)detritus
- Did you just make the word belly into an adjective?********
- Nairn, you're invited!!, you know... i can offer you accommodation when you want to visit usOBBTKN
- I might hold you to that! :)detritus

as a kid, i used to spend the odd summer in Lloret de Mar...part of the Costa Brava...
it's pretty amazing...

for a young kid from Peterborough Ontario, it was an incredible experience to be there...the beaches are incredible..the food was fantastic...
my grandparents had a nice house up in the hills on a street called carrer salvador dali.... https://www.google.ca/maps/@41.7…
and we'd walk all the way from there down to the town...go to the beach, etc....
pretty great way to spend the summer....Highly recommend the area....
I haven't been back as an adult, but my wife and kids and I were in the french riviera a year ago for a few weeks,...i'd guess about a few hundred k away....and it brought back a lot of memories....
