Upgrading computers at work. Currently on a 2011 Mac Pro with a Cinema Display and some dinky HP screen next to it.
Do I:
Get a Mac Pro with 2 Thunderbolt Displays?
Or:
Get a 5K iMac, loaded and keep my current Cinema Display on the side of it until a matching 5K display comes out?
Mainly using Ps, Ai and Id with some photo and video viewing and possibly some Final Cut or After Effects in the future?

I've recently got in to AE from mainly print and web. I have a big iMac with decent (but smaller) second screen which I've found essential.
And a big iMac with the the best-you-can-get second screen gives you a better (but untidier) display than 2 thunderbolts? Non?

I was just researching this the other day because it's about that time for me to upgrade from my 09 Mac Pro, I'm primarily in AE and considering all the 4K - 8k footage that will be coming down the pipe the new Mac Pro is it, that shit blows the new iMac out of the water. I'll find the comparison linky
- Hey man, you don't have issues rendering on new MCPRO? I heard nightmares about that - I'm definitely a novice for AE, but want to get into heavily ASAP + C4D..antimotion
- I have a 2009 imac and it's on its last legs (leg to be literal). Imac is nice because it's all in one, but still unsure between the two
: \antimotion - Id keep the mac pro and just get a pci ssd, new cards... it'll have at least 5 more years on it.dorkKn1ght
- I'm still on the 09 with SSDs vid card, ram, but the files I'm working on lately, shits just not cutting it anymoremoldero

Getting a 27 i7 Flash SSD model myself with the 4 gig graphics card. $2850. Pulling the trigger next week. I have a early 2007 Mac Pro that has been upgraded with SSD, lots of RAM and graphics card, so I am hoping that the new iMac would last me quite a few years. I don't need that much power but I figure I won't have to upgrade again soon.

Ordered the Late 2015 27" 5K iMac with the fastest cpu, 3TB HD, 4gig Graphic and 8 gb RAM.
I'm upgrading the RAM myself to 64gb! (or maybe just 32gb)
- No SSD? That's a must for me, i have it on all my machines.ArmandoEstrada
- The 3Tb HD is a Fusion drive I believe it's a hybrid of Hard Drive and 128gb SSD.ok_not_ok
- I think the new fusion drives are 28 gigs.ArmandoEstrada

uuugh can't make up my mind either.
anyone use a mac pro that connects to a screen when needed? i really just need Ps and Lr at this point in my life. would love to edit video at some point but not happening anytime soon.
i love the portability aspect, but once in a while i need to sit on a bigger screen dammit.
- i'm talking about a mac book pro..sea_sea
- I hook mine up to a screen every day. It's seamless.monospaced

Thunderbolt displays are shit. You can even get a 1440p 144hz with gsync for less.
2/10 would not buy.
iMac 5K is OK for looking nice in the office but it's not really a powerhouse. Depends on what you do. Software Retina support is still lacking.
Mac Pro only gets interesting when you get high specs and they're really pricey, unless you spec it up it's just an iMac ton.
Pro Users aren't really the target of Apple anymore. The only product left I would really recommend are their laptops because of great displays and the body. Go for Macbook Pros, a nice stand and a good monitor.
- the iMacs are more powerful than the MacBook Pros across the line, and for less money. that's the tradeoff of portability of coursemonospaced
- TBdisplay is shit. I second that.pango

Mac Pro will last you more years than the iMac, but if you plan on upgrading again in 2-3 years get the iMac.
- stretch that to 2-4ernexbcn
- Ya, you can still update box you have and it's formidable with current systems.dorkKn1ght

mac book pro all the way - been using at home for a few weeks now on heavy duty Ps. works just as fast/efficient as Mac Pro i have at office. only thing i would do is add a nice monitor.

Think we're leaning towards a loaded iMac 5K. The Mac Pro is probably more powerful, but it's 2 years old and due for an update.
I think we'll keep the cinema display next to the iMac until a 5K display comes out, then we'll upgrade.
Don't think work will go for getting me a laptop. But I'll be happy with the upgrade either way.
