The mb pro I have (2011) can't handle 4k.
It can, but only with certain monitors, and only at 30 hz.

And, it seems, certainly not with 1 billion colors. So you guys recommending that...how are you getting your monitors to work? Pango, you said you have the same (2011) mbp.
- I don't have the 4k monitor...pango
- Do you need 4k?pango
- My bad. What with the q and the other replies I assumed you did. Don't need 4K. Colors would be nice. Still a bit undecided tho. Thunderbolt is pretty neat. EspPeter
- ecially because I plan to hook up a few peripherals. Put the thunderbolt to use as the mbp is old, and a lot of spread extras over regular usb take up resourcesPeter
- Depends on which model you want. they all have several USB3 ports. if that's good enough.pango
- mbp (2011) doesn't suport usb3. Those have to go through thunderbolt for that kind of data bandwidth.Peter
- ya i don't even have TB. I think i got the one model before you're.pango

To me i care about colour more than resolution. I don't do video... I think that's the only instance that matter?
T-bolt display has 16.7 million colours and roughly 70 - 81% Adobe RGB.Dell UltraSharp 24 Ultra HD Monitor - UP2414Q
1.07 Billion colors
Adobe RGB 99%, sRGB 100%Depends on what you care about i guess.
I like to have extra colours...- Well... dell's got 4k and more colour... and cheaper...pango
- Apple's got simpler cable management... and glass screen....pango
- Yeah. Had one at work. Glass is a bitch.Peter
- That UP2414 only got 3.3 stars at Amazon. Ok, Amazon, but still...Peter
- Not sure what kind of performance I get with a 2011 macbook connected through the displayport. It just seems I get a little smoother workflow with the bolt. OrPeter
- ...I might just be blinded by that apple.Peter
- Dell -> minidisplayport. Would work. But can this old piece of junk I have play with that resolution all smoothlike?Peter
- I don't know about UP2414Q. I have U2413 24" Monitor with PremierColor. Absolutely love it.pango
- :\ I work with graphics and photos that doesn't move much... i don't really pay attention to the smoothness.pango
- Mini display, Display port 1.2, HDMIpango
- I have 2011 MBP as well. I just don't know about the smoothness...pango

Apple displays are chunky, glare and are ridiculously priced even for an Apple product. You can get a better eizo for half that money
Other than that, can a 2011 MBP drive a 4k display?

4K dell.
as much as i like apple product. i wouldn't buy their monitor.
Other than "OH It's Beautiful!" the stats just don't justify the price.
by a lot. (i'm ok with by little)- Same price when refurbished.
Spec-wise the 4K is sweeter, but the thunderbolt plays nicely with the setup I have.Peter
- Same price when refurbished.

any recommendations on new 4K monitors around $500?
Amazon has me comparing these two at the moment...
Samsung EU590 UHD-QHD 28" (TFN)
Dell Ultra HD 4k P2715Q 27" (IPS)
