My (recently) ex-gf is struggling because her two younger brothers who live in Indiana are using it. One of her brothers (20) has been a user for years and he steals things from the house-- the other brother (17) keeps a padlock on his bedroom door. Now the 17 year old brother is starting to do it too, and it's just so tragic.
Right now her dad is dying of cancer, her mom is on H too, and is an alcoholic. The dad has always been a drunk and an abuser. But with him dying things are really unraveling and all her family is flying off their hinges. She's safe in California and living a productive life, working a job that will only give her so much flexibility with her family. She of course doesn't want to share the extent of her problems with her employer.
She wants to fly back to Indiana and interject herself into her family's situation, see her father through his dying days, and try to get her youngest brother off of heroin before it's too late. I am telling her that there's only so much she can do, and she can't take 3 months to try to fix her family that seems determined to destroy itself. It's amazing enough that she got out of there alive and in good mental condition herself.
There's only so much you can do, even for your family, and there's little you can do to get someone else to stop using a drug like heroin.

I've done most recreational drugs under the sun but heroin and crack are where I draw the line.
Saying that, I've actually never come across anyone doing heroin in my life. Not once been offered it, not once seen someone doing it. Certainly not as common over in in the UK as I imagine it is in the states.
- eh? its massively common in the UK... you must move in different circles.fadein11

I knew someone, many years ago. Got addicted, went to jail for while, sacrificed a great carrier and spent most of his life trying to get back to par.
Pretty sad.

I heard people get hooked on painkillers, and the move onto heroin? What if I get in an accident and get hooked on painkillers? I saw a documentary on heroin and I don't want to fall into that path.
- Yeah, it's a small % of ppl using painkillers switch to H, but a huge % of H users started on pain killers.sarahfailin

One of only two drugs I'd always swore I'd never touch, just because I was always 99% sure I could never trust myself with it.
It's made quite a resurgence here in London, at least - especially around here In North London where there's a large Turkish community with the import/export means to get it in cheaply.
I've been surprised and disappointed to see its uptake around here, including at least 4 people I know. All younger than I, but not by much.
They're all still alive, but their lives appear to have gone off at the deep end. One is now living in a squat south of the river - a shitty squat, mind, not a 'good one'. He's blown relationships with everyone up here, with his friends, siblings and parents, and .. well, he's not in a good way. A bit of a nob, I thought, but a smart and engaged guy, really.
Another I know is/was a terrifically talented musician. Was always a bit irritating, but essentially a good guy. Similarly, his situation's mired in the doldrums too. He was kicked out of his house a while back, and now has a rep as a thief.
Besides that we've had the ambulances around here a couple of times over the past 6 months, with hushed murmering of "Heroin, innit?"
*shrug*
I'd not willingly touch the stuff, ever. Some things can't be done in moderation, for most people. And I mean '99% most'.

Not sure why someone would do it. I guess from being naiive.
- You guess wrong.Morning_star
- It is largely naivete. People think that they can "control" things when, often enough, they can't.formed

I have smoked heroin/opium on 5 occasions. I can say hand on heart that i have had great experiences. This was over fifteen years ago. I would never do it again.
Comfortbly Numb:
Hello,
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone at home?Come on now
I hear you're feeling down
Well, I can ease your pain
And get you on your feet againRelax
I'll need some information first
Just the basic facts
Can you show me where it hurts? There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain, you would not understand
This is not how I am
I have become comfortably numbI have become comfortably numb
O.K.
Just a little pin prick
There'll be no more aaaaaaaah!
But you may feel a little sickCan you stand up?
I do believe it's working, good
That'll keep you going through the show
Come on, it's time to go.There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone
I have become comfortably numb.

There are apparently lots of people still doing it in NYC:
US agents in New York seized a record-breaking $50 million worth of heroin smuggled from Mexico in the biggest such haul in state history, officials announced Tuesday.
The more than 70 kilos (154 pounds) of heroin was seized from a vehicle parked in an upmarket neighborhood of the Bronx, near Horace Mann, one of America's most prestigious private schools.
The drugs were found in 70 packages labeled "Rolex" in a hidden compartment under the floor of a Chevrolet Suburban, prosecutors said.

The suburban town I live in borders an inner city area where heroin is readily available. Every couple of weeks I read an article about a suburban kid getting shot, robbed or overdosing from drugs purchased in neighboring city. Police are starting to use Narcann now to revive kids on the scene from an overdose which is crazy.
Having two little kids now, the prevalence and ease of access to pills and heroin scares the living shit out of me.
