Grim. Only 2nd degree burns, dude was lucky.
- pretty fucking disgusting. The protesters are getting just as bad as the police_niko
- but fuck me, if this is what it's escalating to, does this end with Chines tanks rolling into Hong Kong for an all out occupation?_niko
- or maybe Hong Kong has realised all is lost at this point and there is no end-game other than to burn this bitch down so China has nothing to take._niko
- Yeah hard to say how it ends. On one hand Hong Kong is part of China, that's not going to change. On the other hand you have a population that mostlyyuekit
- supports the protesters, and gets more radicalized the more you push them. What good is an occupation going to do?yuekit

Good luck and goodbye, Hong Kong.- It's like the reverse of the Berlin Wall coming down.yuekit
- But keep in mind, HK never had a real democracy. This limits things even more but previous system already stacked the deck in favor of established interests.yuekit
- True. But I think now the "established interests" are more concerning than before. But what do I know - I just would like to go there again.Longcopylover

Beijing has a plan to change Hong Kong – but can citizens fight back?
Even before Beijing gains complete control, “Global Hong Kong” has emerged and energised the local movement, and will evolve into a parallel structure detached from the establishment, a force of resistance Beijing cannot readily get rid of.
- was thinking of something similar today after the UK granted assylum/citizenship to 3 million natives of Hong Kong. There can still be a Hong Kong outside of_niko
- the old city, in the minds and efforts of its former citizens. A global, stateless state that exists beyond the streets and crumbling towers of the archipelago_niko

Leaders of Hong Kong pro-democracy group Demosisto step down as security law passes
- Game over.shapesalad
- Yup game over for now. Of course it was always going to be tough, HK is part of China after all. We'll see what happens next.yuekit
- Hong Kong is more Western than all of Asia, it's only "part of China" on paper, we should support these people as our own brothersgrafician
- True, what I mean is China has all the leverage here and always did. But whether they can change minds of an entire generation of young people remains to seen.yuekit

I was in HK a few years ago. I remember the horse-races in happy valley: wanted to spend my leftover HK$ before leaving the next day but won several hundreds with the horse Mount Victory. Good boy.

So I've been in Hong Kong for a couple weeks now and during that time barely saw any protests at all. The impression people are getting from the news of a city that is constantly in chaos is not really accurate.
However today there was a huge march, must have been tens of thousands of people at least, down the main area of Kowloon.
I saw protesters climb on top of subway stations and smash the signs and doors with hammers. A bunch of people break down the door of a Chinese owned bank, then go inside and smash all the ATMs.
Also saw people break into shops (owned by China or by someone who said something negative about the protests) and set them on fire. They would then leave a flyer on the wall nearby explaining why that business was targeted ending with "We do not forgive. We do not forget" lol.
The more radical protester go to these things decked out in a weird combination of soldier and mechanic. Gas mask and body armor while also carrying tools to dismantle stuff. I saw one guy who had figured out the tools needed to remove the bolts on metal railings on the side of the road. They would then use the railings to create barricades to block the roads.
Apparently the protesters are still engaged in a battle with the police about 20 min from my hotel.

Half a million protesters expected today and China is threatening with big military-police force: https://twitter.com/willripleyCN…
- if they intervene, they do exactly what the protest is againststed
- I have trouble seeing what China would gain by sending in troops. It will just turn public opinion in Hong Kong further against them.yuekit
- Are they gonna kill every protester? Put the entire city on lockdown forever? There aren't any good options.yuekit
