Anyone on here do this as a hobby? Interested to know what kind of setup/cameras people use. Please share tips and photos if you have any.

I've wanted to dabble in it a little, but it isn't a cheap hobby, and you need access to areas with very little light pollution. I've only gone so far as to get a large binocular:

expensive indeed and also a ton of trial and error to get a decent shot.

Canon's 6d seems to be the real winner right now. Combine that with a 2.8 (or faster) lens and have at it!

depends on the type/size of photo you want. a larger/wider pan you could use a 1.8 50mm or the 85mm. that would get you pretty wide since the focal area would be...outter space.
if you wanted to hone in, go for something like a 300 or larger. sure the f wont be as good but if you have zero light pollution you can just do a few min exposure or something. I use a black card or black piece of something to put in front of the lens just before the shutter snaps sometimes so that it wont get any post motion. A good dslr should have decent iso range. even if you set it to 100 and do a crazy long exposure it should come out ok.
But play around and see what you can do.
