^ i would be wary of using w3schools stats as a guide to true global browser statistics, as they explain on their site, the data is gathered from their own sites logs, and who visits that site? mainly web devs, who are not using IE.
A service that gathers a more rounded stat might be: http://gs.statcounter.com/ as they gather their data per the following:
"Stats are based on aggregate data collected by StatCounter on a sample exceeding 15 billion pageviews per month collected from across the StatCounter network of more than 3 million websites."
hope it helps. and yea, fuck IE.
p.s i still dev to IE8 for major companies, as the stats require it, unfortunately

Didn't realize that IE usage was this low these days (been away from web development for quite some time): http://www.w3schools.com/browser…

Yep, and you still have to support it. Although in April next year Microsoft will drop support for XP and only if you pay ~£500 per year per machine will they choose to still support you on a per company basis.

It's not difficult to support IE8, there are ways and means.

If you think IE8 is hell, well.. you've got another nightmare coming.

In my last very informal and unofficial check, I found that out of all IE users for my clients' sites, more people are using IE 8 than IE 9. I'm pretty certain that's because IE 8 is as high as you can upgrade to on a Win XP machine.
I do web development for small businesses and I try to support down to IE 8, but nothing below.
But that being said, I don't stress about things not displaying perfectly in IE 8 or 9 the way I did even a year or two ago. I have my own version of "good enough" for these browsers, and I reach that point and then move on.
Better to spend my efforts enhancing the mobile experience, because more people are going to see that than are going to be viewing the website in IE 8.

Maybe say IE9 and implement Chrome Frame https://developers.google.com/ch…

Yeah, depends on analytics. Sucks to still have to support browsers that not even Microsoft supports.
- jtb260
Depends on they're analytics. Though we push for 9 as the bar if at all feasible.

Work for top 3 national news site in Holland: 15% uses IE8, 17% IE9 and 16% IE10 ... urgh ... most people visit from work, hardly IE visits in the evening ...

I always say fuck 'em. What it does is continually supporting them and they continue to use IE 7 or 8. If you force them to upgrade or use a different browser things can move along faster. Wishful thinking for all case studies.
- Ugh sorry grammer....ArmandoEstrada

If the website you're developing is meant for corporate users, Fortune 500 types, it's safe to say they're using something newer than IE9 or even IE10, no?
What type of company doesn't upgrade for 5 years?
- big companies on computer buy / lease contractsalbums
- browsers aren't free?randommail
- IT depts oversee that stuff, not individual users, it's a result of policy, not a mass choicealbums
- You would think that, but they can be slower due to cost / planning for updates.crillix
- My experience is the opposite is true. The bigger the company, the more IE8 users there are.hereswhatidid
- your assumption is the exact opposite of reality. I'm stuck supporting that shit cuz all my clients are F500.zarkonite
- yep - complete opposite from my experience - bigger and more corporate the client - older the browsers.fadein11

Ours does. For most of our projects it is our IE baseline, a couple are still hanging on to IE7. Stupid IE.

For the sites I do, yeah, it's still super popular. Best check out any stats you have for any sites you are working on and decide from there. I tend not to worry about IE7 anymore.

Do clients still ask for IE8 compatibility???
