Admins of Evolution Marketplace, the current leading iteration of Silk-Road-esque black markets, close down site and abscond with $12,000,000 worth of Bitcoins, scamming thousands of drug dealers.

People have speculated that the guy who said he was organizing the hits was the same guy who was blackmailing him. I don;t think there is any evidence that anyone was actually killed. So the transcript might be showing Ulbricht getting scammed out of almost a million dollars in Bitcoin just by chatting with a con artist.
- Didnt really matter though. He wasnt on trial for that, and ultimately noone was killed.CygnusZero4

Silk Road Arrests In Seattle, Britain, Sweden As Crackdown Continues
The takedown of the underground drug market Silk Road was apparently just the beginning. Since then, authorities have arrested Silk Road customers and dealers in Seattle, the UK, and Sweden—and promise more to come.
Meanwhile, the FBI is attempting to track down the Silk Road Bitcoin fortune. They've seized about 26,000 Bitcoins belonging to Silk Road customers but are still searching for over 600,000 Bitcoins—$80 million—Ulbricht himself is believed to have amassed while running Silk Road, according to the Guardian.

Is Mark Karpeles the real Dread Pirate Roberts?
In the third day of the Silk Road trial in New York City, suspect Ross Ulbricht’s defense has pointed the finger at Karpeles, the former owner of Mt. Gox, once one the biggest Bitcoin exchanges on the planet.
To back them up, Homeland Security agent Jared Der-Yeghiayan testified that his two-year investigation into Silk Road led squarely to Karpeles, a self-proclaimed “hacker.”

The idea has been around since the early 90s. Bitcoin and Silk Road are just the first viable implementations.
