This happened to me when I first got my iphone 5. It wasnt working for a full day, brought it into the Apple store and for whatever reason, it just started working again. I didnt touch or do anything to make it work again.
Ive had my phone for about 5 months now. That issue has never come up again. Weird.

BRING IT TO THE APPLE STORE!
I had the same problem a few months ago with a 4s. My headphone jack kept thinking i had headphones in or something. Anyways I took it to the apple store. and they just swapped it out for a new phone!!!

I've had a bunch of problems with text messages not sending. Then I don't get a notification it fails until about 3-4 days later. Missed a meeting because of that.
Could be ATT, they've had issues before (not iPhone, but another phone I have).

O M G I finally found a solution. It's not a total fix because the vibrate switch on the side no longer works. But at least the audio is back.
In case anyone else runs into this ...Re: iphone not ringing just vibrating

potentially dumb question but have you definitely checked the switch on the right hand side? I solved my gf's same problem by switching it after 6 months XD

All I can say is that my iphone 4 stopped being able to use the speakerphone after about a year so I dumped it for $150 and got the iphone 5 which also stopped working as soon as I crossed east of the mississippi but they actually gave me a full replacement and it seems great now. I would recommend you just get a new phone and get out of the iphone 4 if you have time.

Both of those sounds can be turned on and adjusted in the "Settings."

my 4 has been acting up since installing iOS 7 — not sending txts, not loading txts i've had stored for awhile.
resetting fixed it, or force closing & reopening apps.

My 4 has been like this for a good while.
Audio works when headphones are plugged in.
Back when it first started to happen I read that it might have something to do with the headphone jack – a short of sorts – that makes the phone act as if headphones are always plugged in. I keep my phone on silent anyway so I never really looked into it much more. I think there were supposed to be ways to clean it, though. Could be worth looking into.

my "refurbished" 4 that a bought and arrived at my door with a shattered screen and it did that, audio in the headphones worked, but not the speakers, when I replaced the screen myself it went away, so in my case it could have been a just loose connection.
- those connections surprisingly are very easy to pop off btwmoldero
