Wow, this place ... the words 'poisoned' and 'chalice' spring to mind ... thanks to anyone who helped, I genuinely appreciate it. To the rest of you, well, I wish you the best in your struggles. As it happens, we've received a suitable image from a passenger through a social media shout-out. Have a nice week, folks.

Dude you ask a photo for nothing, what do you except?
    Do you work for free?
if it where for a magazine, I would understand (just) but for branded content? Hell no. And don't do this thing: your change where your work can be seen by millions'. It doesn't work like that.

    • Right ... so you have it all completely arse about face, but that's okay. And I don't understand your random word sentence at the end. Are we playing Scrabble?

Tank02 - you are the one that is wrong quite frankly. Eoin basically extended the same contest they run every month in the magazine to people here hoping he could get out of a jam.

They don't pay the winners, in fact, most mag contests like this don't. People are willing to do it for the exposure and the opportunity to talk about where they've been.

    • The prestige of your photo showing up in an in-flight magazine is pricelessmonospaced
    • Can you imagine the amount of work this would generate for a photographer? Ferrari moniez.monospaced
    • No, because its not about that or getting rich.mg33
    • Mono, has a photo ever made you want to travel to that place?mg33
    • eoin said specifically that the benefit was publicity. And yes, images do make me want to travel to places, of coursemonospaced
    • I'm being 100% serious here, your photo in the back-seat pocket of a flight is like becoming famousmonospaced
    • Brand execs scour these kinds of magazines looking for photographers, and hot young talent is acquired this waymonospaced
    • I'm trusting here that you're not being sarcastic. :)mg33
    • I'm being sarcastic about the fame, but I do disagree with tank02 genuinelymonospaced
    • Well, your sarcasm is certainly misplaced monospaced. There have been some huge international commissions garnered for our photographers based on someone seeing their work in the magazine.

I'm right actually. If it where for a photo magazine, yes. A legit competition or feature. Normal. I was just featured in Stylist magazine with 4 page feature on best deco / design blogs in the world.
But this is branded content. Do you know how many times i'm approached with this kind of tomfoolery because I'm a photographer. From the moment you deliver to a brand, its branded content. And there is a price for that.

  • mg330

OK, so the concept of readers having the opportunity to submit photos and a short essay to a travel magazine is wrong. Got it. How does that make it branded, or any different than a photo mag? Did you even look at the example he included in the first post? It's a page in the magazine, with a photo, and the essay. How is this "branded" any differently than a similar feature in a photo magazine?

    • I don't think the concept is wrong in any shape or form.monospaced
    • OK mono, I am pretty sure you and I are on the same page! :)mg33
    • Reader submissions are normal in most mags.monospaced

I'm happy for your success tank02. It is an in-flight magazine, it is branded content inasmuch as something appearing in Stylist magazine is branded content. I'm sorry you feel offended by my putting this out there. I'm a genuine person, and I no more want to swindle people for content than I wish to devalue your profession. Essentially, I thought it might appeal to someone who might be a hobby photographer, who had been to an Aer Lingus destination. I loathe the idea of spec work. I just wanted to broaden my options for this spread, rather than con someone. But the backlash has been pretty intense, so I've learned my lesson. I apologise for any inconvenience caused.

  • HAYZ1LLLA0

Tank02 - I work on many mags and there's nothing wrong with this open and honest request. We use Flickr photos all the time from people who like the exposure as amateur photographers.

And just so no one thinks that we were desperate to get something for free, or somehow swindle someone out of their craft, here's a link to some of our main photographer's commissions for the magazine. We pay well, but I think it's worth it for excellent work.

    • I think Tyler Brûlé spotted his photo in the the back-seat pocket of a flight one time ... then he started being commissioned by Monocle ... after that, needless to say, "Ferrari moniez", because that's what it's all about, at the end of the day.

Brand's competition fails so guy asks strangers for free photo to get out of hole... its ridiculous. Was the photo submission requested from said publication (with a million readers and no budget)?

  • fadein110

Sorry I'm not - was this an open submission for a magazine? in which noone responded?
or is this dude asking for a free photo off strangers?
please explain - my head is fried from bug fixing. I am not trying to cause trouble (honestly) - just do not understand why the magazine will not pay for someones work?

    • I need to stop looking at code and try to understand what the hell is going on - its insane!fadein11
  • mg330

They run the open submission opportunity in every issue. Like lots of travel magazines. Send in a photo, short essay, etc. If they like it, they choose it and use it in a future issue.

Looks like Eoin's AD and whoever put the mag together realized they didn't have a suitable photo at the last minute, so he pretty much extended the offer to QBN.

They don't pay anyone for these types of submissions. People probably know that going into it.

monospaced, I am sincerely sorry if I was brusque with you earlier, I was under an immense amount of pressure. I had images but I wanted something better than what we had been submitted, since it was a DPS up the front of the magazine, so I thought I'd widen the net. There were two ways I could have spun the spread: as a passenger submitted photograph: I knew some people here had flown Aer Lingus previously; or as an amateur photographer's shot/hobbyist's shot of one of our destinations. I felt you were making me out to be either stupid or conniving, trying to get something for free. I understand now you probably weren't doing that, so I apologise for being less than friendly.

    • All I wanted to do was use this forum, on which I see lots of talent, to see if anyone wanted to get involved. We have a pretty big budget so we don't 'need' to do this type of thing, we just find it's something that readers react well to. That's all.

You hold a contest and declare nobody the winner, and then come here asking for a free photo under the wire? Drinking a bit too much of the prestige kool-aid? I think you know where you and your team can shove your arrogance.
