That is one big mother fucker of a header

    • Yeah and why is it fixed in place? The whole site seems designed for a 28" screenukit2
    • I couldn't even read it on my ipad.mg33

I've not read your proposal in the link, but only because the website looks like crap on my iPad. The large fixed header means you can't actually read the content when you zoom in.

But if you need to learn more about glitch aesthetics, I'd suggest the book from an old chum/tutor of mine -

This kid is the new Derek Blais.

  • fate0

    Chris, I like your work.

But this is the stupidest fucking proposal and idea I've read.

You're a Jr. art director (intern), not a marketing guru.

Stuff you found on tumblr doesn't equal a global marketing strategy.

  • severian0

    This is absolutely horrible.

  • fate0

Also, the number of "unused" and "pitch" work in your portfolio is really deceptive.

  • mg330

I think the idea is a big stretch to be honest. I've thought about it a bit today actually. As an MMA fan I've tried to see the connection you've suggested between taking a hit and a "glitch" but I just don't get it. Might be because glitch art doesn't even seem that cool to me. It looks very dated.

  • mg330

Also , you have a lot of hyperbole in your document. I'm not denying John Jones' awesomeness, but is he doing anything that hasn't already been done? I feel like you are trying to suggest there's never been a fighter like him before. Incorrect - there have been many. Ortiz, Liddell, Couture, Silva, GSP, Silva, Shamrock, Fedor... Each of these fighters was a dominant, popular, powerful, multi-title defense champion. Jones is great, no doubt, and I bet he's going to continue to dominate. Sherdog has him as #3 in P4P rankings behind Silva and GSP - your suggestion that he is some new anomoly is not true. Silva has not lost since 2006, GSP since 2007. You - or anyone - cant claim that Jones is something we've never seen before, because it isn't true.

    Good points, mg33.

This is the kind of idea a good Creative Director would look at, pat you on the head, then throw in the trash.

  • cannonball19780

Okay, look. I can understand there may be an opportunity, and the SINGLE concept you are advancing does make a few A to B connections, but fuck, man, stop drinking your own kool-aid and stop assuming you've stumbled into this goldmine of an idea which is really this amalgamation of an unapplied visual style and a malformed marketing strategy.

Let's say what you are saying really had some legs. You know what would happen? They would see how you are trying to strong-arm your audience with this posi-manifesto, take what you have, dust your diatribe off of it, and put it in the hands of a more savvy and capable creative director. After iterating it into a more sophisticated strategy, thereby making it theirs, you'd be lucky to get an honorary credit.

Instead of trying to build this loud "lets do this" concept gang bang like it seems you are shooting for, you should take this stuff down, go lock yourself in a studio for a week, and post an actual ad on Vimeo, finished as you intend it. If what you are saying is true, that would turn heads at Nike, and people would come TO YOU to ask about it, not the other way around. Plus, if Nike tried to rip it, you'd see the community tear them a new one. They've done it before.

  • lvl_130

yeah, you got spunk. but you don't understand the actual ladder system the creative field invokes. good luck. just remember you ain't entitled to shit.

  • _niko0

    glitch?

  • mg330

    Two additional things:

"IN ADDITION, THERE IS AN EPIC SUPER FIGHT BUILDING STEAM THAT ALL MMA FANS WANT TO SEE FEATURING THE TWO BEST FIGHTERS IN THE WORLD, BOTH NIKE SPONSORED ATHLETES"

This is incorrect. It is widely accepted that Silva and GSP are the top two P4P fighters in the world. And I'm sure you know that fans have been wanting a fight between them for far longer than a Silva/Jones matchup.

" I think I have figured out a way and I did it in my free time with no outside influences or resources. Here's my answer: USE "GLITCH ART".

When you say "no outside influence," you mean except for the existence of glitch art, which came long before this idea and obviously is the focus of your idea.

Look man, I hate to sound like a jerk, because you obviously have a lot of passion for this idea. But so much of what you've written feels like hyper stream-of-consciousness day dreaming. I'm only echoing what a few others have said, but that write-up needs a TON of work. I can't imagine anyone taking it seriously in any way.

    dude...

    go for it!

    that is all...

To echo some of the responses here - nice effort! Honestly, stay in the industry a lot longer, learn a lot more and DON'T lose that enthusiasm. I know plenty of guys who have let the years carve out all the optimism and 'what if?' Ideas from them. They create safe, boring work.

Really happy to see a true energy around here.
Read between the lines of the more critical responses - there's good advice here.

My advice; keep learning, growing and making.
    Cheers!

I think if you're just doing this as a self initiated project you have the time (no deadline) to actually create the artwork (i.e: the print ads, the storyboards for tv spots). As it stands you've got a ton of reference and your best shot for getting your idea across is to actually create it.

If you're gonna pitch this you should put this together as a nice PDF that reads like a brand book that cuts way down on the amount of words to get your idea across.

After all this is nike. If you know they're already working internally on MMA stuff than you're going to need to come to the table with something really cool if you want any shot at getting to work on this.

So.. if you've got the time, fully execute your idea.

Identity - thank you, that is the goal... In all honesty, I got really sick of making boring filtered work and I'm only going to keep this type of work up, conceptual, unconventional, unexpected, "unfinished" to get people thinking about this. The work will get finished if it gets picked up, that's how you sell an idea, that is how you sell a script to a movie - get people intersted than get it produced. If you think agencies got started like Weiden and Kennedy overnight, they didn't, that is the big picture. To create clients, projects and brands that people are excited about and talk about. Just need a filter, a clearer vision and that is what a constructive critiicism is for. Yeah my site sucks for now, yeah my site is composed of half finished work... I'm redesigning everything I have ever worked on (it's a lot of work) and I have to finish the work people pay me for. As for the pdf approach... What do you think I am doing? I am packaging and writing a proposal all this week. If you think QBN is the only forum and creative eyeballs that see this work, it's a just a small chunk. I am only gauging interests. And of course, I'm reading between the lines, it's qbn... ha. Grain of salt, grain of salt...

    • If you don't intend to finish your work, you'll need to do a better job of talking about it. That does not include a "wall of writeup" assaultcannonball1978

Bogue - Yes, that is the next step... I'm actually working with two creative directors/writers that are much more experienced than I... I do retail design work and have for the last 3+ years. I work on the global directives for adidas and nike, I am not a writer, I am not a creative director. The next step is to mock up ads and posters with said concept and pitch it. The end. I <3 your feedback. Jaded and boring ass work and people that comment on others without linking their own portfolio (FATE, cough, suck my dick, cough) don't count in my books, at all.

    • You don't need a portfolio to have valid feedback. Grow up.cannonball1978

The great thing about the sports marketing world is that everything has been done, the only people that survive in this world are either the innovators or the "yes men"... I'm not a yes man. Move on down to Portland, create something new, try to make a dent in the culture, when you do... I'll gladly be the first to give you a high five and pat on the back. Than tell me everyone in this world loves all your work and it makes perfect sense... I'm only looking for two or three factual statements that help me and I already have that. Thank you very much to those that actually helped me. Gonna make my header even LARGER now to piss off more people with ipads.
