My company is doing spring cleaning and old computer equipment will salvaged. There are two old Macs (Pro G5) and if I want to I can keep one for myself. Just wondering, what would be the best usage scenario - media/file server?
Is anyone of you still using ones? Any suggestion for further usage?
As a side note: interior to me looks like a combination of engineering and feng shui - simply awesome.

Ha, I saw Mac Pro as fridge or bar.

i still use one to run reason/logic. works a treat. was thinking of using it as a hackintosh, ripping all the insides out and starting from scratch. then i saw what was involved and got cold feet. http://www.insanelymac.com/forum…

i've heard the box is desirable for people making hackintoshes. i have a G5 whose motherboard shit the bed. Haven't tried to get rid of it yet, but i've seen the shells go for $50 on ebay
- wow - great ROIfadein11
- HA it was refurb to begin with and lasted 6 yrs as the only way i made money. i'd say it already paid for itselflocustsloth
- fadein11 is right, the case from an old Dell or HP is worth waaay more than any piece of shit aluminum Apple case.monospaced

Not much use now, even as a media/file server. It'll guzzle power which isn't really what you'd want for a server and if you fancied it as a nas you'll have a hard time trying to find an OS to run on the old hardware.
Its a shame because they're good machines, but just too long in the tooth now.

The fact they're PPC really limits their potential, can't even run chrome on them.
Cases are fucking sweet though

oh and their power usage/ noise is massive so they make terrible file servers in a home.
