it wasn't only what she did, it seemed to be the relish she took in making other peoples lives miserable..... and the rather strangely demonic way she seemed to delight in telling people they "were wrong", often in situations where they couldn't respond... she fought very unfairly and seemed to love it...
- She did seem a quile twisted. And racist. And wasn't she very good friends with Jimmy Saville, seriously.eoin

The longer you're in power, the more hatred you can build up for yourself. I know, as a liberal working class male, she was a total bastard at times, but I can't think of any government in the last 35 years who's actually finished their tenure with a country full of happy faces. Politics is a twisted, fucked up world. But then you watch The Thick of It and it makes you feel so much better!

"And wasn't she very good friends with Jimmy Saville, seriously."
oh come on! EVERYONE loved Savile back in the 80s - even shrewd politically-oriented types who used him as a lumpen means to garner something close to empathy from kids of all the the working class people she's pissed off...
- Fair point. The Pinochet defence and protection is pretty unforgivable however.eoin

I lived in the midlands in 1987-88, and the feeling I got was that, yes, her policies were horrible to segments of the country, but what really was so bad was her "fuck off and die" sentiment, it seemed she took joy in the misery she caused,
to me, it was the "fuck you factor"
....there wasn't the least bit of remorse from her for the hardships she caused....
- What use is remorse though, I mean really? "I'm fucking you over, but hey - I feel quite bad about it"?detritus
- Especially where the 'fucking over' is backed by a cinviction you're doing The Right Thing - what use remorse then?detritus
- Ftranky I'm glad she wasn't a hypocrite. Better than can be said for those before and after her.detritus

I wonder why Americans did not have the same type of feelings when Reagan died? Maybe because we forget so easily.

Gerry Adams
Margaret Thatcher did great hurt to the Irish and British people during her time as British prime minister. Working class communities were devastated in Britain because of her policies. Her role in international affairs was equally belligerent whether in support of the Chilean dictator Pinochet, her opposition to sanctions against Apartheid South Africa; and her support for the Khmer Rouge.
Here in Ireland her espousal of old draconian militaristic policies prolonged the war and caused great suffering. Her failed efforts to criminalise the republican struggle and the political prisoners is part of her legacy. It should be noted that in complete contradiction of her public posturing, she authorised a back channel of communications with the Sinn Fein leadership but failed to act on the logic of this. Unfortunately she was faced with weak Irish governments who failed to oppose her securocrat agenda or to enlist international support in defence of citizens in the north.
Margaret Thatcher will be especially remembered for her shameful role during the epic hunger strikes of 1980 and 81. Her Irish policy failed miserably.
- Gerry Adams was also a total cockgoldieboy
- I preferred Adams when he looked like http://www.clker.com…detritus
- i prefer him when he spoke funny._me_

You know the whole Gerry Adams IRA thing gets on my nerves these days. It's like the whole thing never happened.
I grew up in Preston and Warrington and come from Galway, so im well qualified to comment having been surrounded by bombs going off all over the north west. Spent most of my time being beaten up as a kid in school for being a terrorist :)
To quote him strikes me as odd and all the papers did yesterday.
"Murdering terrorist cunt gerry adams didnt like it when thatcher went after him." He wasn't a freedom fighter, just a thug much like most of his mates.
Funny how the IRA more or less disappeared overnight after 9/11. Somehow their main source of funding being east coast Irish groups in the USA, didn't think it would be that smart to fund a terrorist organisation
Irony is that Irish americans still laud him, but as an Irish Briton so to speak I despise that bloke.
It one of the things she got absolutely spot on. "We'll talk when you renounce violence"
- +1, it's hypocritical for either side to lay the blame t the feet of the others - shit was centuries of festering..detritus
- ..which is to say, he should'ver been the bigger guy and just shut the fuck up. Of course, he's not though.detritus
- totally, but i'd say thatcher's policies here could be partly responsible for his rise to credibility/ cross to mainstream politics.kingsteven
- also, that 'we'll talk when you renounce violence' really worked out for her eh? in the mean time we'll intern your supporterskingsteven
- supporters - all martyrs in the making. driving the poorest from both communities irreconcilably apart.kingsteven
- so yeah, still very much 'happening'.kingsteven
- Still festering, just politically in a quiet patch. It'll flare up again when one side or another sees the other getting an advantage.mikotondria3

She did so much damage to this country! Unfortunately every prime minister since has followed in her footsteps.
And where is the protest now? Where have our protest signers gone? We're left with shallow hipster crap that says nothing.
