^ This. The gutter can be any width you want it to be, problem solved.

is this really happening?

The gutter does not need to be full column width. Try line-height x2 between columns.

I use 12 as a default.
you can break it into so many quadrants.

^ A 12 column grid doesn't give you much space in between each column.

You can also produce a one or two column, on an even or odd column grid. For instance a 12 column grid can be divided into 3 or 4 columns.

If I want the items to be the same size, an odd numbered grid can give one column gutter, but an even one gives two column gutter. Do people design with odd number grids?

Do you usually do something like a 16 column grid for a website?
I had a nice 16 column grid working, but then my client wants to have two columns of content. How do I have two things side by side without them either being too far apart or touching each other?
An odd number grid is much easier for two columns.
