.aec doesn't do that. The actual 3D support in AE is a bit of a joke currently and needs to be imported VIA Photoshop in most cases last time I bothered to look at it.
What .aec does do is import cameras, nulls (IIRC) and render passes. So you can render your 3D then take it into After Effects and add particle systems or other camera relative effects.
If you want 3D textured objects in AE then Element is your best bet. Adobe doesn't provide a decent solution for it... despite wasting all that time on 3D support in Photoshop for some reason.

Yes aec is the camera moves, it is designed so you can place objects on top of planes etc. it is a bit if a faff to be honest. However you can get some sweet results. Make sure to export your different layers as QuickTime movies then comp. it up and keep them as 2d layers then it will all piece together smoothly :)
Good luck honkey tonk plonk.

^ It's better to render them to image sequences actually.
That way if you have a 5 minute sequence and need to make a change in the last 10 seconds you only need to re-render those frames not the whole video file.
- why can't you just export a movie from those last seconds? what's the difference being an image sequence instead of aESKEMA
- video file?ESKEMA
- OK I think I get it. That way you wont need to make an extra cut and add a video, everything just replaces..ESKEMA
- Nice tip :)ESKEMA
- Exactly, should update instantly in After Effects when you re-render the image sequence.animatedgif

Yeah defo image sequences. I have a cheeky wee net render set up and it rips through it super quick :D

thx qoob.
havent had a good excuse to be in AE for years and was never able to settle on a 3D platform to really dedicate the time to become "proficient". I have been amazed at the wealth of decent info on youtube for C4D. I've been programming and shooting photos for too long i guess... leave it to mogfx to have good video readily available for free. Now if i could just autotune the guys voices into not being nails on a chalkboard i'd be set.
