    If you had to choose:

$2600 Mac studio with 64 ram + 1tb drive or

    $2300 Mac studio refurb 32gb + 2tb drive.

I still need to get a monitor (likely the dell ultrasharp 27". My late 2015 imac is finally starting to show its age. I think I should go for the extra ram for future proofing a bit.

Apple Studio Display vs Dell Ultrasharp

I was using a 2.5K Dell Ultrasharp. Anyone could see the pixels. Photographs look incredible but I work in UI/UX design and typography matters to me. I send a lot of emails, work on a lot docs. Might as well have the best. Bought Apple Studio Display because I heard that 5K is better (“no scaling!”) on MacOS. Ended up returning it and buying a Dell U2723QE (new, top of the line Dell 4K 27”)

Bottom line on sharpness: 2.5K to 4K is a massive difference. 4K to 5K is a very subtle difference.

    So here’s my take:

    Apple Studio Display
    PROS:
5K is sharper than 4K for type and UI. You can see the difference but it is subtle. If your vision is corrected and you’re a designer you can see the difference, just barely.
    Industrial design is beaut.
Sound is great, built in mic is useful for me. I work with a MBP 16” that I like to keep closed. So, the same as a Mac Studio or Mini.

    CONS:
    • Camera quality is garbage, I care about design details and that’s why I buy Apple stuff. This camera will never be good, software is the problem, but it won’t completely solve it.
    • As far as I could tell, Center Stage doesn’t work in Zoom or Google Meet
    • Removal of a power button is a terrible design decision. I use this in my bedroom. If Bluetooth wakes up my machine, this fucking giant bright-ass screen lights up the room. Only way to turn it off in the middle of the night is to: SIGN IN WITH MY PASSWORD or unplug it from the powersource. Solution? Shutdown my computer every single night? Throw a dark towel over it at night? This is the worst design decision I’ve seen from Apple since they removed MagSafe from laptops. No consideration for the user.

But the biggest problem was that the Studio Display is too reflective, as I’ve said here. I was getting headaches from reading text because the glass reflects the natural light in my room. Made lots of typos (in Figma, no auto spellcheck) Don’t buy this if you work in natural light.

In the end I got the Dell Ultrasharp U2723QE. Everything about it is better, unless you happen to have an office with very dim light. Plus you can connect it to two computers at once. Charges the MBP. Good hub on the back. Works with old-ass computers. No camera or mic. And it’s about $1000 less that the Apple Studio Display. (At this point I’m willing to pay top dollar for the right screen.)

I really want Dell to make a 24” 4.5K. If not that, a 27” 5K. But for now, the U2723QE is very good!

    • You should shutdown your computer as soon as you finish working. Continuously running electricity throw a machine while you sleep is not great for machine + ecoshapesalad
    • Sleep Mode is sufficient, no?nb
    • But if this is your real concern then you shouldn’t buy a Display that doesn’t have a power button either.nb
    • lol, I leave my office workstation on for weeks at a time. Our render machine had an uptime, before we *had* to shut it down, of nearly a year without restarts.face_melter

I’m returning the Studio Display. The display is just too reflective. My office lets in natural sunlight and I’m getting a headache trying to read text through the reflection.

At night it’s good but if my option is this monitor vs sunlight then sunlight wins every time.

P.S. The camera is total garbage and a software fix may improve it but it’s not going to make it amazing. I don’t care about it but buyer beware.

Replacing my iPhone 6 Plus with a Google Pixel XL. Pretty upset with my last two iPhones and how long they lasted.

The 6 Plus had the screen ghosting issue where the touchscreen randomly wouldn't work. You had to kind of twist the phone and/or push on the screen to get it to work again. Apple admitted it was an issue (loose connection) but wanted $150 to fix it.

It also had that annoying battery issue (software related?) that anytime my battery was under ~30% it would just randomly power down and claim to be out of battery. Plug it back in and it turns on instantly with 30-40% battery.

Just the other day it stopped picking up cell service. The SIM card works in my router still and picks up LTE. This was the real nail in the coffin. The other issues were just super annoying. Which is ridiculous to deal with on a $700 phone now that I'm typing it out.

I was going to get an iPhone 7 Plus. However, my wife just got one and it's super buggy. The biggest issue is that sometimes it doesn't ring or vibrate when receiving a call — even though both are turned on. Yes, her new $800 phone doesn't even ring sometimes. She's a nurse and takes call so her phone is pretty much useless to her until they get this fix.

So I'm saying "fuck it" and trying out the Pixel because I feel like a fool to give apple another $800 for a phone that has so many stupid issues.

You might not think that is too crazy, but I'm an iOS developer and have only developed for iOS for the last six or seven years. Suddenly I'll be without an iPhone — so that feels weird. My current job is an iPad app, so that makes it a little easier.

I love my Macbook Pro and the OS, but I feel that things are really starting to go downhill — especially on mobile (software) side of things. I see Apple job postings for pretty high-level positions on StackOverflow a lot now.

Long story short — I'm giving the iPhone and Swift and rest and am going to try out Andoid and Go Lang.

    • I hope that your $800 Pixel doesn't have any problems at all.monospaced

I have been a windows guy all my life. I build my own PCs. I have used Macs from work so I am familiar with them and respect them but have always been allergic to the sales bullshit and overpricing and the cult of followers that blindly follow them. I could always build a PC myself that is as fast as whatever mac machine is out there for half the cost.

But this is different, because it is like going down to the core layer of how shit gets done on a computer and rethinking it.

At first I was like: 8GB of ram? this is a toy

But they build RAM onto the CPU and the way the code is written, they don't need as much........and so on. Read these posts and watch the video NBQ00 posted. A lot of good info there.

It's about time, really. The intel model has dominated for too long. Now we know what Apple is spending a lot of their R&D on - reinventing the computer from the bottom up - and not just building shiny expensive phones.

This sums it up well from @dhh on twitter:

"I pray that Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm is letting the M1 give them ideas, take them in new directions. Because this level of sorcery is too damn powerful to be held by a single company. Especially a monopolizing conglomerate like Apple. But fucking kudos to those chip wizards"

    • Competition is good for the consumer. There's room now for companies we've never heard of to step up, too.formed
    • Intel fell asleep at the wheel and will die if they don't have something at least on par very, very soon.formed
    • Too powerful. Sorcery?!
It’s ARM architecture. Not new. And in the lowest end of the lowest market share computer on the planet.
      monospaced
    • Next thing you know the derpy dumb haterz will say Apple killed intel or some stupid ass shit. Look, it’s a niche machine and a niche company.monospaced
    • I agree. If the competition wants to be relevant they will respond. But it will be THEIR fault if they can’t step up.monospaced
    • Just like adobe didn’t step up to make flash a decent mobile experience. Ha.monospaced
    • Apple is just a company. A really big one. They are not better or worse than anyone else. They make some good R&D decisions. Good for themdkoblesky
    • Exactly. Saying they are too powerful is kinda funny. Because they really aren’t. They aren’t really winning except in profit.monospaced
    • I agree with everything you’re saying pretty much. I can’t wait to see where we go with this next gen approach and competition.monospaced
    • @mono wait till 2022 to even consider an upgradegrafician
    • Yes if competition doesn't step up it'll be their fault. :/i_was
