Forcing Apple to replace Lightning with USB-C is super annoying. It’s anti-design and anti-user. Governments should stay the fuck out of tech unless it’s like firearms or exploding phones or safety issues, etc.

People have no idea how fuckign annoying it’s going to be. There are already a bunch of different usb-c types that look identical and are labeled as usb-c and using the wrong one can damage the port or cable. Just let us have our expensive apple tech. We’re all happy over-paying for apple design, even when it’s not perfect.

    • Actually no, this is good. This stupid Apple lightning port that is only on iPhones (but none of their other products) is anti-design/ anti-user.NBQ00
    • You can connect an Android phone directly to the Mac but need a fucking dongle to connect an iPhone, wtf.NBQ00
    • One standard connector port technology like USB-C now and in future across all tech (Android or iPhones, Macs or PC) is the best.NBQ00
    • ^ like I said, people have no idea what usb-c isnb
    • USB-C is reversible and has 24 pins.
      What are you on about?
      palimpsest
    • no such thing as anti-designrobthelad
    • Anti user? It’s a good thing having a standard shared.monospaced
    • Also USB C is all the same shape. It won’t damage anything. Are you confusing it with micro usb?monospaced
    • you know those times when you type something out then wisely decide not to post because it's completely fucking stupid?face_melter
    • You’ll find out. You’ll see.nb
    • Also, attempting to create one standard that will live on in the future is absurd hubris. It’s completely ignoring the history of technologynb
    • The problem with usb-c is that many non-compatible standards have been built into a single plug design that is impossible to recognize visuallynb
    • A device with a Type-C connector does not necessarily implement any USB transfer protocol, USB Power Delivery, or any of the Alternate Modes:nb
    • the Type-C connector is common to several technologies while mandating only a few of them. - source: Wikipedianb
    • Maybe you’ll believe me after you’ve fried a usb-c cable because the one device or the cable wasn’t compatible.nb
    • Or maybe you’ll believe after you’ve spent hours researching and buying and returning different usb-c cables because usb-c isn’t one standard at all.nb
    • All the ports on every device and cable will look the same and yet sometimes not work. This is worse than usb-anb
    • I understand the desire to have one cable for everything but a) that’s actually not great design and b) usb-c isn’t one standard anywaynb
    • OK, chief.palimpsest
    • wtf are you talking about then? and why wouldn't USB-C be a great standard? which it is so far, in my opinion.NBQ00
    • Give it time. You’ll seenb
    • I've been using USB-C almost exclusively FOR MANY YEARS on laptops, headphones, kids toys, Nintendos, vape pens, monitors, HDs, and on and on...monospaced
    • Not only are all the cables identical and perfectly interchangeable guaranteed, they also have never failed and I've never ever even heard of a burn out or fry.monospaced
    • The only devices we have that don't use USB-C are the iPhones and it's long overdue. Now you're iPhone can connect directly to more devices.monospaced
    • And, yes, of course I know they have differing data speeds, it's not like they can just fail, they just slow things down.monospaced
    • Oh, lucky you. I’ve experienced it.nb
    • You can no longer claim that you’ve never heard about a burnout or fry. I’m telling you.nb
    • He's still going on about this.i_monk
    • lolmonospaced
    • I’ve not heard of a usb c cable frying or burning because it doesn’t happen. Can’t even find anyone reporting it anywhere.monospaced
    • Except for you, but you aren’t really reliable on the subject based on your post here.monospaced
    • Let him live his truth.palimpsest
    • it does happen, with cheap shit that they've slapped usb-c connectors on to sell but doesn't fully implement the spec.kingsteven
    • but apple is the company pushing the spec on high power USB-C, and uses USB-C on almost everything else. i didn't read the sidenotes.kingsteven
    • Apple isn’t the only company. Almost everyone else was on usb c already. Apples late as usual.monospaced
    • Ummmm do you think I’m lying about my experience with usb-c and Apple? Looool ok. Talk about fanboysnb
    • fanboys but you're the one saying that apple's proprietary connector for accessories is better than the standard?kingsteven
    • i have 30 usb-c cables and know the ones that are high-power, TB4, USB-4. DP, use the wrong one and it'll charge or transfer data slower... that's it.kingsteven
    • i blew up one thing with a high power usb charger (charging case for a pair of cheap chinese headphones) and when i went to return there was a product recallkingsteven
    • because even companies making £30 bluetooth headphones know thats a fault.kingsteven
    • i'd quite happily plug any phone or high-end bit of gear in to anything using a decent cable.kingsteven
    • Just because something hasn’t happened to you, doesn’t mean that it doesnt happen.nb

Wondering if anyone experiencing my sudden, bizarre iTunes issue. I'm in latest iTunes in Monterey, all up to date.

I have a usb thumb drive in car with my curated playlist folders - some songs purchased thru iTunes, some from other sites like Bandcamp - so AACs and MP3s.

I copy/paste songs from my MacBook iTunes playlist directly into folders on my mounted usb and this usually works like a charm. Today it (iTunes) has decided that some songs can be copied over and some can't, not even to a test folder on my local desktop.

However, if I show in finder that blocked song and drag it from the source folder it copies over happily per usual.

DRM is old news so shouldn't be an issue. In fact some of the blocked songs are Bandcamp DRM-free MP3s!

So what's with iTunes suddenly copping an attitude, applying blocks if copied/dragged from the app?

    • Sorry 'Music' not 'iTunes' but you get the ideaprophetone

    • not in any practical sense. if you need 64GB of fast memory nothing else will do. there are some things it is genuinely terrible at...kingsteven
    • i do push it hard though. i'm often editing 100GB mp4s without proxy or running some demanding process like AI or gif of the day on Chrome browserkingsteven
    • my M1 is a supercomputer compared to any intel mbp though (i moved from an i9 hackintosh that would rival any intel mac pro to this as my main machine)kingsteven

Considering the piles of cash Apple has, it's amazing how extraordinarily shitty areas of their software is. Not in big ways, just irritating ways.

eg. The "frequently visited" section on a new browser tab in Safari is full of thumbnails that I rarely visit at all....

One of them is the appointment page of my doctors clinic... a page that I've visited maybe 3 times in the last 5 years. What kind of dogshit algorithm has apple slapped together for that to be included... every single other thumbnail is also equally as moronic.

    • Conversely: Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are far superior beasts (IMO) to Word, Excel, and Powerpoint (all of which I refuse to use).Continuity

    • To me more disappointing is that this "3nm" isn't really that efficient in terms of battery. Still the same battery life or worse + overheating.NBQ00
    • That’s because it’s 10% faster using less energy. Do try to keep up.monospaced
    • What’s disappointing is an equally powerful PC uses 5-20X the energy to do the same. Absolutely pathetic.monospaced
