Why is the MacBook more expensive than Dell?

I bought a MBP in 2004, used it for design, photography, video. Was both my work and personal computer. Travelled the world with it. It died in 2013. Nine years of use.

In 2013, I replaced it with a refurbished MBP. Six years of use and I'm thinking it might be nice to get a one, but I'll probably keep this for a couple more years. It has no issues, runs fine.

Know anyone using a 2013 Dell for graphics work?

Amortized over the years, the Mac is cheaper. And arguably better for the environment.

Now, if you need the latest spec each year or two for Pro work, maybe the Mac isn't the best value. You should calculate cost of ownership, including resale value.

I'm not saying the last few years of Apple laptops has been good. It hasn't. But the 16" is a step in the right direction.

    • And also, yeah, part of it is the luxury tax.nb
    • I'd be very surprised if there weren't oodles of people quietly beavering away on old Dells without much thought about it.Nairn
    • I don't like Dell, but they're solidly-built, unfussy machines and given the cost difference, can come with better specs than Apple meaning they'll last longerNairn
    • I have an old Dell I still use that's probably 2011. My Precision running W2000 works perfectly fine, too.formed
    • That Precision is from something like 2004, fyi.formed
    • I'd take a Dell with Mac OS running smoothly. I hate the Windows environment.i_monk
    • Seconded, my Macs always last a long time and I've been able to fix/upgrade everything I needed to.mathinc
    • I just retired my 2012 iMac. My 2015 laptop is still a beast, just upgraded the SSD and I'll probably keep it another 3 years or so.mathinc
    • I've had little bugs here and there, but I just can't hang with the Microsoft operating system.mathinc
    • I’m still rocking a 2011 mbpGnash
    • Y'all using these Dells to run Adobe CC 2019 apps?!nb
    • I mean your old Dells. It's fine if it still works, but does it still "work" work?nb
    • If you are not willing to invest $$$ in something you'll spend 40+ hours a week working on, than I'd say you're a "windows guy".

      : )
      ideaist
    • Most Dell hardware can be had cheaper than Apple, and on paper the specs are generally better. This was always the case.evilpeacock
    • But I've IT'ed a fleet of Dell laptops and had to do multiple part replacements frequently. And drivers aren't updated as much as the component vendors.evilpeacock
    • And Dell support software was stuck in an endless security backdoor scandal which sucked up IT resources.evilpeacock
    • Dell vs Apple cost-of-ownership was kind of a wash, with Dells needing more support and having more downtime for that. YMMV of course, it depends on what you doevilpeacock
    • Ha! Gnash, me too 2011 mbp still going strong running adobe cc flawlessly including after effects work_niko
    • My current MBP is from 2009. Only use it for work the odd time but its still going strong. I will finally replace it with the new release though.desmo
    • Also, Apple has always been significantly more expensive since day 1. If price is a big factor for you, then the choice should be easy.desmo
    • anything can last, that's a false measure, especially if you keep fixing it! My 2018 MBP is broken, lasted 15 months. I own a tshirt I got 10 years ago.craigatkinson
    • Longevity isn't a measure of goodnesscraigatkinson
    • Look at avacado. They only last a day or two, but they're great, and expensive, and a unibody shell.craigatkinson

    • We ran a Power Mac G4 "Smurf" tower "legacy" backup server for 19 years before the power supply gave up. Got our $4K value out of that for sure.evilpeacock
    • Cuz people are buying mb. If people didn't buy then they'd be cheaperHayoth
    • I still use my Dell Precision M6800 laptop for all my work. I bought it 2014 or something like that. It's the size of an old VCR though.haga
    • @craigatkinson You're literally comparing Apples to Avocados!!! :)nb
    • Longevity may not be all that matters, but this is a machine which I use for work so cost-of-ownership is highly relevant.nb
    • Our stories are anecdotal. However, it is possible that a MBP could have lower cost of ownership than a Dell, there is little reason to buy Dell.nb
    • ...unless you really love Dell and want to drop the extra cash on it. ;)nb

My work shipped me a 16” MacBook Pro M1 MAX. Lol I would have preferred a 13” or 14” but nobody asked me.

Anyway, this thing is huge, heavy, boxy, and kind of absurd. Without tapered edges it’s so clunky looking and feeling. It has giant rubber feet. Looks ridiculous. The notch doesn’t bother me and the UI around it is interesting.

This may be impressive tech but it feels like a step back in industrial design. It reminds me of the design of MacBook from 2006 but with a cheap plastic keyboard.

Steve Jobs showing Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf how to use a Macintosh computer that Sean Lennon received for his 9th birthday.

It was October 9, 1984, and Steve Jobs was going to a nine-year-old’s birthday party. He’d been invited just a few hours earlier by journalist David Scheff, who was wrapping up a profile of the Apple Computer wunderkind for Playboy. Jobs was far from the highest-profile guest, however. Walter Cronkite, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Louise Nevelson, John Cage, and singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson were also in attendance. And Yoko Ono, of course—it was her son’s birthday, after all.

Despite the last-minute invitation, Jobs had managed to bring along a gift for the young Sean Lennon. A few hours into the party—once cake had been served and the adults began to talk amongst themselves—Jobs asked Lennon if he was ready to open his present.

It was, naturally, a Macintosh computer. Released in January of that year, the machine was the newest of Apple’s personal computing products on the market. Jobs set up the Macintosh on the floor of Lennon’s bedroom, demonstrating how to use the mouse by opening up MacPaint. The boy was enthralled by the program, initially sketching a few simple shapes with the paintbrush tool and then moving on to a sort of camel-lion hybrid.

A few of the adult guests wandered in, including Warhol and Haring. Warhol took one look at the computer program and turned to Haring in wonderment. “What is this? Look at this, Keith. This is incredible!” A few minutes later, Warhol asked if he could take a turn in front of the monitor. Jobs explained how the mouse worked, but the artist instead lifted it off the floor and swished it through the air. Finally, Jobs put his hand over Warhol’s and steered it along until he’d gotten the hang of it.

After a few minutes in concentrated silence, Warhol glanced up. “Look! Keith! I drew a circle!”

That night, Warhol recorded the episode in his diary. He’d told Jobs that a man had been calling him repeatedly, trying to give him a Macintosh, but Warhol had never followed up. Jobs replied, “Yeah, that was me. I’m Steve Jobs.”

    • Who's phone crashes? I haven't had my Note9 crash a single time since I got it.

Apple simply puts gobs of money into marketing and glossy stores.

    How to save $998

    • lolNBQ00
    • I assure that aftermarket designers will design, build and sell stands for about $100 with the next three months. Then get sued by Apple, utopian

    • @utopian When you buy the Apple Vesa mount you can already put the damn thing on any other vesa stand.. That's what we have standards for.. shrug.mekk
    • This stand looks much better!Krassy

What is fascinating (perplexing?) about the millions of comments, tweets 'n memes in past 48 hours over the price point(!) and the stand(!!!) is almost all of the people taking time out of their lives to stoke the uproar are not the target consumer for this product.

They aren't out there crushing complex, pro-level projects on deadlines for a busy studio or demanding clients, that at that level would likely have those equipment costs covered in short order, and prob just pays for itself for next few years.

99% of consumers looking to buy a computer soon will have no need for a super-computer w/ a pro display, so the costs involved w/ these products will have little or no effect on their lives. What does it matter?

If you want an example of this in another form looks at cameras - everyone loves cameras. Almost everybody has one or has had one - even a good one. 99% of people will find a $450 Canon Rebel (lens included!) beyond their needs... but in a heartbeat you could drop $7k on a pro-level Nikon D5 and lens is extra! And a lens can run north of $1-5k w/o even breaking a sweat.

So is it b/c it's Apple?... that ANY announcement from them, even one that is clearly targeted to the pro user, is automatically cause for concern for many b/c they happen to own an iPhone for social apps mainly, and a 2012 MacBook Air they use occasionally to search eBay?

Anyway, fascinating. People are losing their minds!

    • < thishans_glib
    • True, but actually all press is good press, so even people (ridiculously) complaining, create a media impact/coverage. All positive for Apple.SimonFFM
    • I'm sure the stand is worth is price considering the engineering details that went into it (internals and function). But it's still a slight PR disaster.NBQ00
    • IMO Apple should've just added the stand and its price to the monitor and only offered the Vesa mount separately.NBQ00
    • The fascinating part is the gaslighting where you say people making fun of a product are losing their minds.imbecile
    • Apple is simply charging consumers for the development of a product they want to use internallyimbecile
    • You're missing the point of people's outrage. We wanted a desktop mac that was upgradable. Not something that could render Lord of the Rings in an hour.section_014
    • Which, the entry level version cannot fucking do. Making a custom mobo and power supply doesn't suddenly triple the price of a computer.section_014
    • I think boils down to majority of everyday Apple users cannot wrap their heads around a pro level product, not used with costs involved = shock + power to tweetprophetone
    • needs nvidiaCALLES
    • As far as the entry-to-high level desktop target user, they have six iMac models, each w/ ability to upgrade ram, space, vid card etcprophetone
    • I’ve had three gens of Mac towers so I get it... this is the reaction to ‘Apple has abandoned the PRO users’ and prob overkill for most, even myselfprophetone
    • I still think Apple should make a lower end tower, and have been saying that for years. Wno't hold my breath.monospaced
    • LOL outrage because it's not what you wanted. If only there were other machines you could buy. Or just wait for the Mac Toddler, the Pro isn't for you.MrT
    • @MrT, everyone wants a product that, when something goes wrong or needs fixing, they don't get overcharged unnecessarilymonospaced
    • The outrage over Apple's entire line of machines that are essentially unfixable or unupgradeable is more than warranted.monospaced
    • You CAN'T buy other machines that run macOS and are supported by Apple. That's the problem.monospaced
    • Then buy a Windows machine and spend your life waiting for and fitting component upgrades.MrT
    • Apple has always released expensive, mostly closed systems and there’s always a bunch of people moaning about it.MrT
    • And it’s fun winding people up who are outraged at a shop.MrT

Does it even have to be that big?
