There is no set standard.

a hole may not be the best solution alone, you may want to add a grommet/ rivet in the hole for more stability so the card wont crack nor will the string be ripped thru the card. you can also use a metal wire versus a string or a chain with a small gauge.. your best bet is to visit a lot of retail stores and see what the client's competitive retail products are using and find a solution that best fits your clients product while adding your own style and flair to the design, since you are still unsure of how to accomplish it. learn from seeing how the competition showcases that which you need to learn. there is manny different solutions for that. you can use a heavy gauge paper grommet, a metal grommet.. think about manilla folders with a string tie back. think dog-tags.
think damet!! you are the designer, figure it out!!

Get a piece of string and some paper and figure out how big the hole needs to be to work well. Add some bleed. Not rocket science. Or, if you're just designing art, and the tag die and the string are predetermined, just ask them.

your client should be able to tell you.
sounds a bit like your running with you pants down. stop and pull them up.

Does anyone have good diagrams for print production? I'm make some for a jacket company, and don't know how big to make the hole (for string) and the bleed on such a small item.
