if there's studio on the other side of the country you want to work for, but they don't have an opening you know of or anything more than a general email address... WHAT is the best way to apply for a job?
1. Send an email with .pdf.
2. Send envelope with printed portfolio.I would love a job, but dont know if there's any chance. I haven't applied for any jobs like this. What;s the best way to say, I want to work for you, hope to hear from you?

If you send printed, you'd wanna make sure it's really nice (especially if the studio is that far and that good), but that's difficult and expensive you might not get it back. I like the idea of a quick PDF, of course, but it's hard to not be impressed with printed work.

You could also check LinkedIn, see if there are any folks that work there that are on LinkedIn, and possibly try to connect through there. Or if you know someone who is connected to them help FW ur info to them.
However, i know if I received some nicely printed stuff by mail, I'd at least check your stuff out. Doing email might just get you a delete button.

Clarifying my previous post,
Firstly, what I think mono was saying is IF you are thinking of shipping something make sure it looks nice, otherwise you will not help yourself much with it.While I don't think it will land you a job, especially if there are not openings, you might at least be in somebody's mind when the next opening comes up, where you could potentially send a PDF to remind them how nicely you approached them originally.
Maybe it is a good idea to contact some friend working in a professional printing company and pull a favour, or save a few quid and print a short run that you can send to various studios/agencies that you like.
Most AD/CD (besides great work) will appreciate a nice choice of paper and good layout. Personally I keep well presented stuff even if it is rather useless.
Lastly, if most of your work is web/motion related, ignore all the above.
