What's funny is that when I'm sifting through my paper mail every day, and I talk to myself, it's 'Spam, bill, spam, spam, bill, spam, birthday card, Ooo! Cheque from client!, spam, spam, spam, spam ...'

Spam is advertising that you're not interested in?

Spam is the punk rock of advertising

spam is unsolicited and intrusive. the reason why times square ads aren't 'intrusive' is because the space is paid for and is legal/legitimate ad space however you think of it as visual pollution. Nobody pays gmail to send you an ad for dick enlargement via email but people do pay for ads to be added via google ad words to you gmail account. So one is spam the other is advertising.

spam is advertising by brute force, you send out 100 millions of emails, 0,001% of receivers click the link, and since sending out emails is costs virtually nothing, it works
advertising is targeted and expensive

Spam's ultimate objective is to capture your banking/credit card details so they can steal your money. Doesn't matter what they purport to be selling.
Advertising has a product or service they'd like to trade you for your money... so no theft is involved.
That's why spam comes from bot nets. It's a criminal enterprise through and through. Legitimate bulk email advertising costs money.

Yup, one and the same. I've got recycling bags stuffed with "spam" (I still sift through every page, just in case some stupid letter gets caught up in the junk).
At least with email/internet, 90% is taken care of, the rest takes about a millisecond to delete.
