ok ready. our oldest is graduating from HS early in ten days. she is just getting back some college application results. she received the top scholarship at a private university for $20k per year. This does not include any scholarships she actually has applied or any financial aid from the state. So basically we are looking at the cost of a state school for this private univ.

she is #7 in her class and she pretty much has her freshman year done with all the AP classes she's taken. we are so fortunate to have this little overachiever, she sure is making our life easier. <3

So my 6 year old daughter Joni has an iPad. Apparently she has been using it to make videos (completely on her own). Because the iPad is connected to our family iCloud sharing all of the photos and videos are showing up in my photo albums on my phone. My wife and i watched this masterpiece on the weekend and laughed so hard.

    • Man, that is so incredibly adorable. Never lose that. You’re gonna watch that for years and years. Totally made my day.mg33

So I went back and found my post from 6 years ago (Page 8). What a ride it has been so far. She was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at age 2 and we have been managing that ever since. She's doing really well and i am beyond a proud father. I'll update you all again in another decade.

    • Hey, have you looked in to boron/borax and it's relation to arthritis? If not, please do :)set
    • The relation to boron in soil around the world and coinciding arthritis levels is undeniable.set

    • That is great news! It's not easy watching your loved one hurt. Really proud of your brother! Proud of you both.dibec
    • interesting set. Just taking a quick look at the search term it seems like they are suggesting boron/borax as a remedy to arthritis, not a cause of?bogue
    • bogue, AbbVie is about to release a biological blockbuster called Upadacitinib. Please read about it.maquito
    • Thanks Mquito. Just went down that rabbit hole on that. Looks like the clinical trials for kids is in still in the early stagesbogue
    • ... Sounds like a huge upgrade to current JAK inhibitors like Humira. My daughter currently uses Enbrelbogue
    • ... which has been a much much more positive experience than methotrexate.bogue
    • Yes bogue, bodies low on boron are susceptible to arthritis. Countries with low level boron in the soil have far more arthritis. It correlates undeniably!set
    • It's very cheap and safe, it's something the human body needs, definitely worth a try.set

    And ode to my girls:

I'm going to be coaching my 4 year old twin girls in flag football in a few weeks. I can't wait. These two little monsters have been sharpening their knives (so to speak) against each other since birth. I can't wait to turn them loose on those unsuspecting other kids. When we found out we were having twin girls I pictured them being softer than my son. Turns out that they're the most wild, stubborn, strong and intelligent kids I've ever met. If you tell them they're beautiful they scoff at it and insist that they're strong. They give no fucks about what you want, unless you take away all their stuffed animals, and even then it's 50/50. They wake up at 4:30a every morning and do whatever they want -- we gave up taking turns to watch them in the mornings. The other day I woke to a slice of bread covered in hot sauce and an almost opened bottle of beer -- they made me breakfast. When I come home from work instead of just hugging my leg as I try to get through the door, they hug my legs and try to lift me off the ground (I'm 200+ lbs, they're 35). They won't let you do anything for them unless they've struggled at it for a good while. One broke her leg a year and a half ago after getting hit by a bike their cousin was riding and didn't even wince when they put the IV in her arm. They fart on each other, and they've shit in the yard whilst pretending to be dogs. I never thought having girls would be like this, and it's amazing.

As challenging as they can be, I just can't wait to see what they become.

When I was in college me and a buddy took a part time job coaching flag football at an elementary school. Super fun, enjoy!

Super excited: my wife & I are expecting our first in August!

  • nocomply15

There is a small silver lining to all this doom and gloom and quarantine. I know a lot of us are spending a lot more time than anticipated with our kids.

Yesterday I rode bikes with my older son (age 5) for the first time... Meaning, like, he rode his bike all on his own and I took my single-speed out for a spin with him.

In all of our past excursions I've had to walk because I've needed to be there to help him pedal, steer, and keep the rubber side down. But we've put in a lot of practice time together this past week with some major results.

He's currently riding with 1 single training wheel which he's afraid to remove, but he's tearing up the track like a speed demon!

We rode to a school parking lot around the corner and did "races" there. We stayed out for over 90 minutes. He was so excited to have a riding buddy. I told him I was too.

    • Very nice!stoplying
    • great! sounds like quality time! :)api

My 4 1/2 year old daughter and i camped in a tent in our backyard for the first time this past Saturday night. Made a campfire in my grill, had Smores, told her some ghost stories. When we fell asleep she said "this is the best night ever that we've ever had together dad." Stuff like that is just so heartwarming.

In the middle of the night when I was half asleep, she shouted "okay google play!" in her sleep. It was hilarious. She and her best friend use a google home all the time for music at the friend's house.

  • DaveO13

My boys are now 6 and 8.

I really struggled with the early years; the babies, all the 'apparatus', the lack of sleep and freedom to do basic things with my time with any degree of ease. EXACTLY two years between them meant that we basically had 5/6 years of very small kids, which does grind you down when you're living in new york with no family around.

Now they're really coming into their own. They get up and make their own breakfast. They get obsessed with building lego stuff one day, playing football the next and then making fresh pasta with me.

They're great hangs, and i sometimes find myself wanting to text them funny stuff that I see, or jokes that come into my head, or generally just to see what they're up to. They don't have phones yet but its really funny to see what sort of relationship we might have as their sense of humor develops.

I guess the best part is that there's so much more LIFE to have with them, both the ups and down, the routines and the adventures.

It took me a while, but i think i finally love being a dad.

    • congrats, you're riding the wave early. From strictly a son's perspectve- I imagine it gets betterhotroddy
