I am really appalled and amazed by that star wars article. This looks not bad because of the shot and its Vader...
This is and the other examples is shit...
Also I get the impression Lucas has no idea what he is doing sometimes ... "What is more, the Special Edition version here was only scanned from the film negatives at 1080p. This is to be the new digitial master for the films, and all of the new ILM work was done from this scan. So, if you ever see the films in theatres again, it will be from 1080 lines of resolution, never mind a 2K scan (I guess an 8K scan is just crazy talk at this point). But seeing as Lucas shot his second two prequel films in this same resolution, I guess he really doesn't mind, or notice, the quality difference. I would believe that."
- I can guarantee that the digi stock for the new star wars was at least 4k, where are you getting your info from?zarkonite
- its in the article ^********
- top of page two. the new New scans might be 4k but the older ones apparently weren't.********

higher contrast is the result of 'crushing blacks',... that is squeezing all the dark info into itself. It comes from film processing. In video or digital imaging it might be referred to as 'clipped blacks'. It is not necessarily 'higher contrast' as that could be over the entire image and still not 'crushing the blacks'... could be color contrast without clipping the colors. The real effect of crushed blacks is clipped dark areas...that is a loss of dark info. Just because an image has higher contrast doesn't mean it has crushed blacks.
- a photoshop trick on badlu lit imges is to crush the blacks but lower the contrast save skintones...vaxorcist

I love how ThePublics starts another crushed blacks thread, and then proceeds to tell us that we aren't fit to comment. This is QBN, dude.

Anyway, I'm meticulous about my calibration, especially on my television, so I'm often focused on shadow fidelity and I think a lot of the examples in this thread aren't valid crushed blacks. The Star Wars images look like good adjustments. The shadow detail is there, it's just subtle and smooth. I saw Book of Eli last night and that's a cranked up contrast—crushed blacks? Apparently I'm in no position to weight in on the matter. You tell me.

This thread is a total rerun...

This is some seriously dark subject matter.

Those Star Wars remasters are definitely too much on the dark side.
