the Trade printers I've used have always charged an overage fee. annoyingly, they almost never include it in their estimates as a dollar amount - it's usually just in the fine print.
That said, I've never been charged an overage by a consumer printer.

Hmmm....
That's what an ongoing relationship with a printer is good for, and/or using a print broker...
If they see you as a one-off, they'll do this, if not, they'll try to keep you and not do this...

Shady and, I guess, also somewhat indicative of incompetence.

This is the clause in their fine print....
11.Variations in Quantity Every endeavour will be made to deliver the correct quantity ordered, but estimates are conditional upon margins of 5 per cent of work in one colour only and 10 per cent for other work being allowed for overs and shortages ( 4 per cent and 8 per cent respectively for quantities of 50,000) the same to be charged or deducted.
There was no mention of this in the quotes, only when they emailed the T&C to confirm the order.
They seem to think it's a common occurrence in the print industry for this to happen?
We spent over £50k on print buying last year with various printers - It's not something I've come across before - ever in 11yrs buying print for our clients so really astounds me that in these times that a printer is using their small print to squeeze more money out of a customer that could potentially give them much more work. They'll never get future work from us again!
- well... sort of... it happens, it's often eaten, sometimes it's a hot potato billing experience...vaxorcist
