Is it possible to create an editable PDF form within illustrator CS3?
Or can only the artwork be created, before saving out as a PDF then importing into Acrobat Pro to add form fields etc?

I believe you'll have to do it via Acrobat. I don't think Illy has the ability to add those kind of interactive features.
I could be wrong, but I haven't come across it.
Acrobat, or rather live cycle does a pretty nice job with it, detects where the fields should go and all that.

Acrobat is the only adobe app which will let you add interactive form features to an existing document.
I mean... it would only be OH SO USEFUL if you could do that from within Indesign... but Adobe shit's on those kinds of useful features.

Cheers for the info.
That's the answers i've got from digging too.- Create artwork in illustrator.
- Open Acrobat and in "Forms" dropdown select "Create New Form"
- This launched Live Cycle which lets you import your artwork and add editable fields.

Do have another quick question.
(I'll find out the answer when I start building this form but just wondered if anyone has the answer now) ...Can the PDF have a font embedded in it so that the form fields are filled-in in a specific font even if the user doesn't have that font?

monospaced, wheres the option for embedding the font?
Just tried specifying a font in a field, created a test form, sent to a colleagues comp to check, opened it and his form field uses one of his crap system fonts.
- it should do it automaticallymonospaced
- did you "Extend Features in Adobe Reader" ?monospaced
- MAYBE the font doesn't allow embedding...this can happenmonospaced

I did something like this once, I had a problem when the file went back and forth to 3 different editors for last minute changes and when I got it back the editable fields were un-editable... argh! try to edit it all on one computer if you can....

Hrm,
wheres the "extend features in adobe reader" option?
Sorry im a total newbie to this form malarky.

This is a thread from a few months back where i tackled the same challenge you're facing - it should help.

double click the field you'd like to edit, "text field properties" window shows up, under appearance you can make any edits you want to

d_rek,
dockofrubber has replied in that thread saying that your form fields cant use embedded fonts and theyl revert to system fonts when sent out to individuals who don't have that font.
- d_rek0
microkorg,
He's correct. Only if your user has the same font you choose for the form field will it display as you intended.
However, if your user has Acrobat Pro and can edit the form field properties it is a fairly painless procedure to have them specify a font for the form field.

Cheers D_rek
This is a PDF form that is to go out the the public(clients of our client) so the chances of them having Acrobat Pro is probably very slim.

nah d_rek, you just have to use the font in that file on the artboard i believe and the font is embedded.
