Only move for a job if you want to live there regardless of the job. Unfortunately, jobs don't last more than a year or two. Hopefully, it's because you found something better and not a layoff. The is more true earlier in your career.

Can you organise a first interview via iChat or Skype?
Possibly putting your folio up via Issuu or something similar?

most straight shooters respond to some straight shooting, and you def want to work for a no bs boss. I'd say lay it on the table and do what Amicus suggested.

Both Yahoo and AOL paid my flight and hotel for interview - have you asked them to foot the bill?

AOL and Yahoo are unique situations with big budgets. If the company is not one of these, good luck getting a flight out of them.

Ask straight out if they are paying for travel costs. If not, then suggest Skype video instead.
No serious company would make you pay anyway.
