Is 1280px too wide?

Unlike creative folk most people reduce their monitor screen sizes of their browsers so they can hide the screens at work or just because their not visual people. That being said I think we have to stick to 960, and now because of the iphone and ipad even more so than before. Let it be for now it is standard.

yes. unless you are designing purely for people with big monitors
960-70 is probably ideal

I'm in the early phases of rebuilding Stewdio. I'm having a big change of heart from using smaller components that float on a grid to using a larger more structured layout. The new "comfortable" width will be 1080 pixels and change. Easy to do for myself. Probably not the right thing for a client serving a wider array of visitors.
