I usually set up a subdomain on my site while in development and then move everything over once it's ready to go live...
client.mydomain.com
subdomains are easy to set up on gs, just make a folder and name it subdomain.yourdomain.com and then put another folder in there named html. or maybe I've had too much wine at 3PM and I'm nopt reading your post correctly.

no i think you understood me, but im trying to avoid having to migrate the wp db afterwards. what you suggested definitely works though, its just not what im trying to do :)
i think i need to start drinking. heavily.

yeah, it can be a pain. one thing I do to make the db much smaller is kill all of that stupid incoming links and news and new plugins bullshit that appears in the admin panel. all of that inexplicably gets cached in the db and takes up huge amounts of space.
unfortunately, the only way i've figured out to kill it is to edit the wp-admin/includes/dashboard.php file and comment out the wp_add_dashboard_widget calls for those things: dashboard_incoming_links, dashboard_plugins, dashboard_primary, and dashboard_secondary
