i've not lost anything, but i think you run the risk of corruption. if it won't eject, sometimes it's best to power down then unplug and start back up.

I always wondered this myself...
Switching from a PC to a Mac i found myself ruthlessly unplugging some of my USB devices without ejecting...
On a PC you never had to worry about 'ejecting' anything.. you simply unplug and that's that.
On a Mac I can't say that i've ever had data-loss/corruption issues but it definitely throws OSX for a loop when you don't eject a device. I've had finder and other apps suffer through pin-wheel of death a few times because of this.
- Not true. The PC gives warnings if you just unplug and wants you to use DeviceRemoval.monospaced
- At least this POS Dell XP doesmonospaced
- Really? I was mostly familiar with XP... Can't say i've used vista/win7 a whole lot so I can't speak for them.d_rek
- Not making it up. XP flips out when I unplug a thumb drive, worse than OS X, actuallymonospaced
- Yeah you need to click that messy green+grey icon thing in the systray, no idea what its meant to bePIZZA
- because of the shitty icon designPIZZA

Only last week did I have an issue with device removal...
I had a mini power-cut, and once everything had booted up, i got an error saying my back up time machine was 'read only'! at first I thought it was fried, no more back ups etc.
In the end I had to erase the whole disk and do a fresh back-up. So all in all, not too bad, but a little worrying none the less!
From now on, I'm making sure eject any devices before I unplug.
- so it had lost the files?fxone
- I could go through timemachine and 'see' files, just couldn't access them. so yeah, pretty much lostNot_Just_Another
- so I thought I either had to buy another drive and start again, or do a hard erase and start from fresh...Not_Just_Another
- it was probably just a safety measure. bet you could have made it read/write againPIZZA

i have loads of stuff connected to my mac laptop like wacom, external keyboard scanner and sometimes my 1tb external hd.
sometimes when i finish working late at night i just unplug eveything in a rush to take my laptop 2 my room for the late night after work movie but this time i ripped off the external hd as well.
seems files are still there but hope nothing got corrupted. shits
- seems daft to think you'll need a back-up of your back-up though doesn't it? :-)Not_Just_Another
- yeah wtf ...fxone

I've had several zipped folders of backup assets and files become corrupted and un-zippable on my LaCie, and I think it's from unplugging----but the dang thing just won't eject sometimes.

I have never botheres with removing drives correctly and never had any problems until last week!!!! woorking to a serious deadline...unplugging from one pc to another caused my premiere project be corrupt (even the temp saved versions of the same file)
I had even made sure that all filels/windows/programs were closed form the drives...so be carelfull. I had to rebuild a whole afternoons work which resulted in a very late night...unwanted stress and a same day courier. (BTW: I was using an external USB SATA caddy with a 1tb HD)

i've done this by accident lots without any data loss. (annoying how the icon disappears from the desktop about 3-5 seconds before the device actually shuts down!)
except one time it corrupted a folder of 200 photos. the folder would open and they appeared to be there, but as soon as you click a file Finder would freeze.

sometimes it will corrupt the file that lets it mount to your mac. I've seen it before where all the data is fine, but something in the permissions gets screwed up. had to have an IT guy look at it, but there was no data loss. other than that, i've yanked devices out tons of times and *so far* havent lost anything.

Errrf, I'm always wondering about this. I have my MBP connected to external ACD's along with a USB and FW plug and whenever I unplug all of the cords from the laptop I get the you should eject it or else we'll you give you shit message. Never had any problems but I guess now I'll always eject it first.
I guess if Time Machine is in the middle of a backup it could cause some issues too...
Good to know...
