I am trying to create something that I believe is very simple. I just want a nice shadow cast from a light onto some type I create in a comp. Like the poster screen on this video/page: http://churchmediadesign.tv/matc…
Googling is an infinite loop of incorrect lighting tutorials. Maybe some of the masters around here can point me in the right direction.
Thanks!

just turn shadows on in the layer rollout for the after effects light

from online help;
Casts Shadows
Specifies whether the light source causes a layer to cast a shadow. The Accepts Shadows material option must be On for a layer to receive a shadow; this setting is the default. The Casts Shadows material option must be On for a layer to cast shadows; this setting is not the default.- simulating falloff is a different story. needs scripting.cubanhaze

nice!
I have never knew how to achieve this, and I always had to do shadows by placing a blured layer behind the object. (cause drop shadow doesn't do the trick)

i would have thought turning on shadows in layer properties would have done it - be sure the text is a 3d layer.
then add a light, and point it at the text. Then add a plane, placed in line with the floor - this would be the object onto which the shadows are cast, then selectively remove the coloured areas of the plane onto which no shadows are cast using colour keying, add a matte choker to soften shadow edges also.

Also, in the linked tutorial video at 30.50, i dont understand how the "Testing" text is tracked to the scene, without it being parented to a null object.
Usually when tracking you parent the position of the text to one of the null objects - which are just track points exported from the tracking software.
In his example he has not, so to my knowledge it shouldnt match move with the scene but it does...just bare that in mind if it doesnt work for you lot.

Hombre_Lobo,
The Text does not need to be linked to anything in the scene, because with match moving the camera itself is being tracked, not an object in a scene. What you are talking about is motion tracking, but what I covered is Match Moving. If you noticed in the video the camera itself has been keyframed as a result of the match move. Make sure to check out both parts of my tutorial, if you have any questions or problems i would love to answer them.
