Do you have a production designer or prop master on set? Part of their job is to be watching out for this.

Hmm... thanks. Not the anwser I was hoping for, as it seems like a neigh impossible task to clear everything.
I guess we'll have to seek some legal couselling.
- Filmmaking is effing hard. And goddamn expensive. Good luck.harlequino

Bottom line is talk to your lawyer. Even low budget (250k - 2mil) or no-budget (250k and under) films should have a lawyer (entertainment preferrably) for some basic stuff.
- This is basicly no-budget (using our own equipment).neverblink

just blur the logos it will still look cool

However if you are making a movie along the lines of "How Ford/Nike/Kraft Fucks over its workers"
then you have bigger legal issues to look into and it's beyond simple brand placement.

Any visible brand. You need clearance. There are departments in studios and ad firms that handle and negotiate this.
If you don't have or cannot afford to get into it, you'll have to obscure the brand. Profit or personal use has no bearing. If you want your movie seen anywhere, you need clearance.

is the brand integral to the plot of the film or is it just an innocent prop? i would a thought that if it's the former then permission would be needed. other than that, i aint got no clue.

For everything?
Cars on the street? Food being eaten? Clothing being worn?

If you make money off that movie and they see their product they will want some. If its for personal or non profit uses its all good.

Yes you need clearance.

If you make a movie and in that movie a product by 'brand X' is used, do you need to clear that with that brand? Could they potentially make a claim to a part of the profits?
(I know product placement is usually the opposite; where the movie makers ask money for the brand to be included in the movie.)
