For little writing: Notational Velocity + Simplenote
Big writing/projects: Ulysses or A Wordpress install
Dealing with client stuff: MS Word (it's every where)
Invoices: Quickbooks (onto something made in InD)
Proposals: InD

I wouldn't mind using Google Docs to replace my Word, but the thought of some snooping Google employee sneaking through my documents in the cloud is just scary and irritating.

For anything but simple letters, word sucks ass!

I hate all that Microsoft bullshit. Word is dreadful. Excel is for pencil-dicks. Powerpoint is like getting my penis circumcised all over again.

I use stickies

i use word all of the time
- the copywriters send me ad copy and changes in word.
- my current invoices export to word, i then export to pdf.- cmd + shift + s not being 'save as' is frustrating.

first off, when you're writing a letter - it's not just a letter.
every piece of communication that comes from your agency has to be perfect. if you think it doesn't matter, then you aren't serious about design and the image which your company portrays.
i use indesign. if you think you can import and resize an image or text in word™ faster than in indesign, you are on crack.
- ha try telling that to account service, fuckheads never listentOki

When I'm in Word I find myself using the keyboard trying to select a tool and I almost inevitably replace copy by mistake. I hate it, but I can't escape the unending barrage of "content" that comes my way in that format. Ugh.

Many people can color-code their comments in word... hence... ugh! too many people think something's settled because they wrote notes all over a word doc, when they really just contradicted somebody else in color... so I ask for plaintext emails, as it forces people to SAY what they mean, not just color code and hope you figure it out....

Excel's OK.
I guess.
Whatever.
- Excel is its own thing. I've seen people do some crazy calculation's with it. Impressive even.monospaced

Speaking of Word. What's the deal with job postings that require a Word résumé for design work? I use PDF, if a company doesn't have a PDF reader, GTFO.
- word resume request = a bad sign....prepare for idiocy and people who just don't get it....vaxorcist
- word docs allow "keyword search"
Its what HR use to sift through the piles.alicetheblue

i used Word once.

Text Edit does everything I need. If I need to do anything more complicated with the text, InDesign does it better than Word ever could.

Word is the ENEMY. Sure, as a tool, it has it's LIMITED uses, but it's general suckage is infinite. I always find it hilarious when people looking for freelance designers say "must know Word." The fuck outta here w/ that...
As for letters, yeah, I still write em.... W/ pens, on paper. Then you stick em in envelopes. Attach those little square pictures, in the top right corner? That you had to lick, back in the day? Yup.
