how do you make one in indesign?

uhm...

cover spine & backcover is normally one file

I've usually either created a separate file (either just the spine or the whole cover + spine), or used a section of one of the document pages with crops manually added.
I guess you're after a 'thin page' in the document. Don't think that's possible...

example:
Trim size of magazine is 8.3 x 10.75
the printer tells me the spin needs to be .179
8.3 + 8.3 + .179 = 16.779
set me document for 16.779 x 10.75
set columns to 2 / gutter to .179
set the margins to 0
bleed to .125
HIGHFIVE grasshoppa- or you can do it the Kiggen wayrayborn3000
- .125 is a large bleed********
- I like for things to bleed a lotrayborn3000

If you use InDesign a lot I'd recommend buying the PageControl plugin. You can have multiple page sizes in one document, keep them separate from each other, or but them against each other and output it as a spread. It's great for letterheads, multi-panel brochures, etc.
- "butt", I meantJosev
- i dont understand how this would be useful for brochures... unless you are making ones that have different pages... most of the time that is not the case********
- if you are giving the indesign file to the printer it would cause problems********
- i do see how this would be useful in other programs... like illustrator... I don't think i would ever want it for indesign though********
- I give files to printers ALL THE TIME. Without problems. InDesign retains the page sizes, the printer just cannotchange the sizes without the pugin.Josev
- can't change the uniques page sizes without the plugin.Josev
- I love how there's always some contrarion asshole here who has never tried something but is always sure he's against it.Josev

thats the printers job... talk to him and he will tell you what size it will be based on the number of pages and weight. I usually just have one spread and set up guides and crops for the spine within indesign.
- yes based on paper weight they will calculate your spine size.jimzyk
