There is a videogame coming out that I'm a fan of. It's a single player only game, the 5th game in the franchise, and for the first time even though there is no muliplayer, it requires a constant connection to the internet.
Technology is always progressing, it waits for noone. Records were eventually replaced by tapes, VHS by DVD, etc...
So say you're only on dial up, dont have a constant connection to the internet, or dont even have internet at all, how would you react to a game that you love making this transition, one that so many other games are making?

What on Earth does it need to be constantly connected for?

I brought this up because I visit a message board, and people there are so pissy about this. It's crazy to me. Regardless of what the game is doing, why should the dev worry about people on dial up in this day and age?
I dont know a single person still on dial up, and everyone I know that has a gaming machine is on the internet all the time.

are you talking about Ubisoft's new DRM scheme?
- Correct sir. They arent the only ones using it.CygnusZero4

doesn't valve do this with all the steam games? with them i don't mind because it's pc, however if a console game ever pulled this, i wouldn't buy it.
- Yeah we're talking about PC games only.CygnusZero4
- oh then. Nevermind that vvvlocustsloth

it's not just about people with dial-up. What about people who don't have or want or can get broadband access? i would think that having certain functoins (stat tracking, whatever) not be functional if there's no connection is fine, as long as those features aren't essential to the game. But excluding ANY segment of a market that you could just as easily include is a mistake

- The one thing that would blow all other YouTube traffic away is not even officially on YouTube.waterhouse

Yeah I get the idea that consoles arent ready for this. The 360 doesnt even have built in wifi, you have to spend $100 to get that online.
But PC games? Most PCs are online all the time, and at some point here you have to stop worrying about people on dial up. Technology isnt going to just wait around for everyone, it keeps progressing, forcing them to eventually upgrade.
- Next generation of computers will have no disc drives.waterhouse

Valve does do it after a fashio, though you can generally run offline games outside the Steam environment.
I dl'd GTA:IV recently and was infuriated by the MS Live sign on requirement - I feared for a while it would require me to maintain a live connection whilst I played offline - I was very ready to uninstall and demand my money back (whcih would've been a fruitless quest, I have no doubt), 'til I realised I could just set up a shitty local account.
I really disagree with requiring an always-on connection for offline games, that's arrogant, EA-esque behaviour.
Actually, I'm sure I read an article on this subject recently - I'll see if I can dig it out.
- i don't know if it's arrogant or just poor administration to track game usage stats for researchversion3
- I just dont see why games forcing you to be connected is an issue.CygnusZero4

i would react by joining the rest of the fucking world and getting an internet connection.
