came back from Xmas and all of a sudden finalcut is asking me for the serial (which was lost in a fire). Any tips?

nah, picked up a copy in Beirut from a pretty sketchy vendor, so I doubt they'll have my info.

I believe if you use a different serial number than you originally used you will have issues. Next time turn off auto update.
