^ I got a 7D for my birthday, i'm no photographer but i love it, easy to use and my pics come out pretty well i reckon.

Imma get a 5d mkII for sure if my book gets picked up by a publisher and the advance money comes in. But, I had decided this months ago.
- biggest reason for me to get a 5dmkii over a 50d or whatever: shallower DOF from a FF sensor.bigtrick
- You pay £2200+ for a shallower depth of field? ...gjd
- biggest reason, not only reason. dof, resolution advantage, lens advantage (my 20mm prime will become wide angle) = worth the extra $1k over a crop sensor.bigtrick
- ...angle) = worth the extra $1k over a crop sensor.bigtrick

So, after this thread, who's getting a 5D or a 7D?
- version30
cheap video fandangled options does not a full frame sensor make.

Ha! I love/hate threads like this, everybody gets into it and you learn so much! (Thanks guys for the great info shared)
And just when you think you made up your mind, someone comes with just a bit more info or knowledge and sends you back to step1!

^ is correct. Fanboyism in two pure forms.

I have a D90. Both Nikon and Canon make highly capable equipment. For me, Nikon just feels right in my hands while Canon just feels awkward.
Try both, if there is a clear difference for you then go with that, if there is no difference then one deciding factor may be that Nikon have a tradition of keeping lens compatibility across product ranges so even old lenses can work with modern bodies though some modern frills (obviously) won't function.
In truth there is little between them except tribal fanboyism
- I have a bunch of 80's Nikon lenses using $30 adapters to work on a Canon 5D, no AF, but great optics...vaxorcist

"7D body is improved over 5D." um. what?
some extra buttons? yes.
body build durability? no.the 5D has longevity over the 7D

Thanks everyone!

Quick answer – buy the 7D.
Longer answer.....
D300s – Essentially a D90 in a heavier, slightly stronger body; plus a few negligible extras, and the sensor is practically identical. If you're getting this just go for D90 and use the extra £££ for lens/filters. Remember, video quality on D300s/D90 is nowhere near as good as the Canons (if this is important).
D700 – Not much point. Upgrade (D700x/D700s/D800) coming by next year and current D700 is not as good as 7D for all round performance.
5Dii vs 7D – go for 7D. Cheaper, video mode almost as good, high ISOs are just as good. Full frame difference will not set the world on fire for someone used to a D80. 7D body is improved over 5D. Even though changing settings on Canon SLRs is still a pain the arsehole (very fiddly). Cropped sensor also allows for longer tele-zooms.
I spent a long time speaking to people, trying cameras out, searching blogs and substituting FAPtime to get an answer on this, and the 7D is the winner – although by the next summer the D700x/D700s/D800 will probably win once Nikon pull their fucking fingers out.

They have some hi-iso 7D vs 5D II comparisons.... less difference than I might think, also probably more visible on screen at full-resolution than in actual prints or video on anything less than a HUGE screen....I would be leaning 7D at this point, as I don't shoot ISO 1600 much at all.... and I have a 5D for fullframe... but I'm not in the market for a new camera now...
- version30
i see more noise on the 7D

OSFA ... from this example, seems like the Canon 7D is a little more sensitive to light. If you look at the lower right corner there is light coming off the corner ... so I don't know how accurate of test this is ...

well, the camera geeks do keep Canon and Nikon in business... if it was up to people like me (and alot of other photographers who have a business to actually run, with profits and costs to mind) the gear industry would go out of business, as I rent, borrow, make my own, buy used stuff like an old 5D mark I, and don't really spend that much on gear compared to the gear freaks....
- back in the day we would have invested in a camera system and it could last your whole careerTungsten

- when i was your age, we didn't have a camera, just a burnt stick and a cave wallbigtrick

full frame lenses on cropped sensor cameras isn't such a bad idea, you use the "sweet spot" of the lens

"Canon's EOS 7D is a pretty grandiose piece of image-recording equipment, whether you're talking about its size, features or price. You're probably aware of the 18 megapixel APS-C sensor and dual DIGIC 4 processors already, but we've all had to be a bit more patient than usual in waiting for the pro reviews to come out. Dpreview doesn't disappoint though, with a thoughtful 31-page tome awaiting the keen reader, and we've also got more digestible video reviews from DPhoto Journal for the less patient among you. If you're after direct comparisons against competing models, such as the Nikon D300s, you'll find those sprinkled in among the reviews as well, with Cameratown throwing in a direct head-to-head with Canon's own 5D Mark II. The 7D was found to produce "virtually no visible noise" all the way up to ISO 1600, and scored further points for its gorgeous 100 percent frame-covering viewfinder and fast 19-point AF. With a weather-sealed, highly ergonomic body design, ridiculously fast processing and a sensor so good that "in most situations the lens, rather than the camera, is likely to be the limiting factor," the only thing reviewers could criticize was the somewhat uncompetitive pricing, but that's likely to soften with time anyway. Read on... if you dare."
- first it was megapixels, now it's all about ISO. All of which is bs imo.quamb

here's one for the people obsessed with sensor size.
worth a read.- that's a decent article. that guy worries about cameras too much for a guy that takes shitty picturesbigtrick
- but in this case i agree with his moral.bigtrick
