this is something i've gone round and round with - the short answer imo is 'not really' - but i'm far from a flash expert (and know almost nothing about as3) - preloaders i've used in the past:
Kirupa (search kirupa.com there are many)
gotoandlearn.com
From my experience, it's more difficult to add a preloader to a project at the end than to plan ahead - I could be doing it wrong, but i've always struggled with adding preloaders to action script based flash projects. I'd be interested in hearing other flash user's suggestions and experience too.- http://www.actionscr…pablo_28

place this on the first frame with nothing else except a textbox called loadtxt. done. :)
total = this.getBytesTotal();
ploaded = this.getBytesLoaded();
loadtxt.text = "";
this.onEnterFrame = function() {
ploaded = this.getBytesLoaded();
loadtxt.text = "LOADING "+Math.floor((ploaded/total)*100...
if (ploaded == total) {
this.onEnterFrame = null;
_root.nextFrame(); // or play
}
