filter sf, san francisco....
if this doesn't work, i'll help you out. just feel like a broken record sometimes concerning the city.

get your brakes checked regularly.
our brakes failed the day after leaving San Fran and we had visited the Giant Sequoias on the way out to... thank god we were in Sacramento.

i just moved here last month with my wife and 1 year old. we live in NOPA, near the gg park. I work in SOMA. I thought it would be more like nyc, but it's not really; i.e. everyone drives everywhere or rides their bike and not as much public transit.
everyone says the weather's no good here, but i love it - between 60-80, cloudy often but no rain so far. it's only been a month...
yosemite and the sierra mtns are fairly close. good beaches fairly close; my coworker surfs before work.
fyi so far the tenderloin is the only sketch area i've seen. no offense colin_s. overall feels pretty safe here.

Live and work in the Mission just moved into the neighborhood this month, was living in the East Bay for a few years still new to the city. Lots of shops and restaurants near by. You should definitely check out the Mission District on your scouting trips see if it fits your style.

just moved here as well. Mission is nice. Lots of good places to go. More the hipster crowd. The north side of the city has more money and is a little quieter. I have a buddy who has a nice neighborhood in japantown. I've been to some really nice places just outside haight. Depends on your cash flow i guess.

You can look at the hot lesbians but do not stare, just take my word on this one.

i just moved to the tenderloin which is the most affordable part of the close to downtownish part of the city. "livable" is another thing, i guess it depends on your style and if it includes addicts and homeless people wandering the streets at all hours.
nob hill seems nice, as does out in the haight / noe valley. but i'm pretty new here so i don't know much.
