Does anyone here have experience doing a design-related masters degree as a mature student?
My main reason for doing one would be because I reckon I'd enjoy it, but I'd also like to build career prospects.
Is being older a disadvantage in anyway / did you find the extra study helped your career?

returning to school would be a good way to avoid the current job market until things get better.

As a designer, I'm not sure how useful it would be for your career unless you want to teach.
- or what robotron said.gramme

the student discount thing certainly comes in handy

Why not, i think you'd benefit from your age, you're more in touch with what you want and what interests you and you'll probably provide a lot of hands-on insights to the other students. Classes are always better if you have some people in them that have been through it all before.

More school never hurt anyone.
- Except for the guy who went massively in debt and was destitute for life with a useless degreeukit

I don't know about how it would help in your current career (in regards to waht subject you'd be taking etc) but I definitely know that if I went back to college now to do a course I'd get much more out of it now than I did when I finished school, as I would be less interested in getting drunk and fucked up and more interested in actually learning something.

Very good points, thx.
At the moment I'm looking at courses like Design Interactions (which is at RCA). Something that mixes technology / art / design - (http://www.interaction.rca.ac.u...
God only knows if something like this is useful afterwards - but it's an emerging field so it would probably be good for networking.
Mainly I think I'd enjoy it. Definitely reckon I'd be more productive this time round - first time around involved far too much drink and the rest of it.
I think I'd continue freelancing throughout to pay for it.... I guess I need to be sensible and work out if I'd get my moneys worth.
gah! decisions.

Could help if you want to change the direction of your career and get into another area of design. I know a guy who was 40+, running his own studio (him and freelancers on tap) and he did a MA in Brand something, part time. He loved it, worked well for him, got loads of work from it and he could appreciate the opportunities to network like mad a promote himself. He'd never done a BA or anything, but they let him go straight into MA as he was obviously experienced. He said he learned loads too.
I'm considering doing one part-time too. Seems like a good time to do it if you can survive on some freelance stuff.

what shitehawke said. i would LOVE to have the kind of learning facilities/ freedom to experiment/ time that i had and wasted at uni now.
i went back to do an evening course and loved it, try that first if youre not entirely sure.

30 is not old
- Greedo0
ah yes, all these times when you were too high to get out of bed, couldn't be arsed to come to class, another $1500 course wasted...
