Wouldn't you need to create an outline for this???
yeah - i dont believe there is any kind of automatic way to do this - best bet is to create the line, outline it, and CAREFULLY adjust the vector points... curves will be tricky... but thats the only way I know how
Yep. As far as I am aware you do have to make an outline to do it... But.
If there was a way to edit the weight of lines in the way I described, it would make experimenting with the weight of lines so much easier. It would be very handy for working on type.
you could make an artbrush (drag profile to brushes palette), apply to the stroke, then adjust as needed (redrag adjusted profile holding alt/option onto brush).
I've often wondered why you couldn't access the thickness parameter generated by a tablet+brush tool. seems like it would be handy.
I reckon your blend approach is best but manually set the number of steps. A bit of trial and error to get the right number of steps.
You could try using the brush tool in photoshop with various settings defined in the brush palette to get the effect and then trace the shape in illy.
I have done this. Make a long, flat rectangle, about 185mmW x 8mmH. Go Effect > Stylize > Round Corners. make the radius about 3mm. Go Object > Expand Appearance. Select the points at one end with the Direct Select tool (White Arrow), and go Object > Path . Average and click the Both radio button. Clean up this end by deleting the redundant points and using the Convert Anchor Point tool.
Drag this shape to the Brushes palette and click the New Art Brush radio button. Tweak as required.
I think I have just about got it using the blend with spacing set to specified distance.

A couple of problems that could be fixed:
1. The handles on the points influence how the objects blend together. It would be good if you had the option for the blend to be totally even without being influenced by the handles.
2. When you introduce new points to the spline (or replace the spline altogether) the blend object acts very unpredictably. I think this happens because the objects are locked to a point on the spline rather than being able to move freely along the spline. I think this is probably related in a way to the first problem.
Anyone know of a plugin that does the same thing for mac? (hmmm. Is this worth trying bootcamp.....)
Also.... You don't have the option of adding objects to the blend which is a bit of a pain.
I draw on the screen with a Sharpie. Works great but it costs me a fortune in monitors.
Create your own triangular brush and use it as an art brush in illustrator - you can control what direction you want it to travel/be thinner and so forth.
