    Furry muff Josh.

You said something inspirational one time about a design you sent to Korn and they said don't send us this, all that matters is what YOU think not what we think.

    That is true.

But his opinion sounded quite valid to me. It's just an opinion, but some of us agree with it, some of us don't. We don't need grand theories as to why our opinions are correct, but for me your workd doesn't inspire me like it used to.

    Sorry.

I hadn't actually thought about it, but when the writer said it was like a desktop screensaver i thought "that's true! Why is this more clever than a computer generated screensaver?"

    Sorry

Not that that matters. And not that what CR said matters. But some of us agree with it, some of us don't.

I remember right around the time Newstoday became QBN there was a thread about a guy who had said that Paul Rand was shit. I don't think it got as many replies as this though.

    • that was a funny one, tooRand
    • well he's shit at coding, that i know...janne76

So anyway, Josh... I haven't actually done any work yet, but... when I do, can I put you down for a piece?

    20k.

Okay, I'll let you have it for 6k.

except that I don't care about this thread, I like the work of JD, I believe he inspired lots of designers to get serious and do something, I remember biting his stile 8 years ago, why should I bitch now.

he's good, he got successful, why the hate

    my two cents:

Everyone stop hating on Carson and Davis. Regardless about how you feel about their work, they were pioneers of their methods. Now, you might say (as i've heard on here COUNTLESS times) "I could totally do that!" well, I would argue that a lot of people could PROBABLY do Rothko or Picasso - but LIKE Carson and Davis - their work is at one point aesthetically pleasing, but MORE importantly, their work mark a shift in aesthetic, concept, technique, etc. If we hold all designers/artists up to the classification of "i can do that" than lets go to the top. Let's talk about Vermeer. Let's talk about Van Eyk. Lets talk about realism. Realism became less important with the introduction of the photograph - does it make it any less valuable today? no.
I would question most of the people that are arguing that "they could do this too" - "what" exactly can you do? copy a style? Try creating a fucking style/technique/movement. I'd love to see how easy that is.

I like him for his sincerity. It's easy to be cynical, and hard to be honest and sincere. I wish I had that trait.

wow, reading the article and this threas is a lot of work

If David Carson sees this thread and signs up for an account, it will all be worth it.

I personally went to a symposium in Boston with a bunch of other creative talent a year or so ago and I got to witness Josh's alogorithym creative. I didn't think anything about it was stale. You need an eye to capture a still just the same as a photographer has to have an eye to capture the right shot out of 10 similar versions of the same thing. And to be totally fair what Josh's doing was innovative then it should have been taken to the next level if the economy hadn't tanked I bet you would have started to see more interactive algorhythm creative on television advertisements and more. It's cool stuff. It looked on screen like it was alive even though it really was just a program.

Anyways I guess I can see the relation sharing between shepard and Josh Davis, but frankly I don't think their of the same sort at all. Josh's work is out there.... for all of us and I think we can all appreciate that fringe, even if he comes off as the over zealous american.. I say judge him by his work and its some pretty sweet stuff.

Few years ago Davis deserved some attention because it was quite interesting, years on and his work all still looks the fucking same.
Even in the realm of generative graphics there are far more talented people deserving of attention because their work actually evolves beyond a random vector jizz stain.

e.g Flight404, much more talented than Davis and the work actually changes from client to client and he doesn't go round calling himself an artist or any of that crap.
I mean look at that JD vs BMW video, where hes acting like a massive wanker and saying how inspired he was by the car... what comes out of it? a bunch of soul less generative vector crap that could have appeared at any point in the past 7 years of his portfolio for any client, it has no individually defining feature that sticks it to that client other than the shape of a wheel arch

I'd tend to side with CR a little bit here, regardless of his background and accomplishments, a man can't be measured solely by what has has done... this type of commentary is very relevant and these are the kinds of criticisms that I do like about Creative Review, vs a jock-riding, viewpointless publication like Grafik.. Why can't we question a mans motives, behavior and attitude? And the larger questions that arise from this being, what does this type of work actually say about what we value in our profession, is this really so important? Is Josh any different than any other opportunistic celebrity happy to make their next endorsement?

When I sift through a site like Be ha nce I feel flat, I feel that our generation is so far removed from the notion that commercial graphic design should actually being about communication.. It's so commodified now to just be a visual product, it doesn't need to mean anything, it just needs to be and that's ok... And sometimes the process itself supersedes the result, which is a bit of arty wankery if you ask me...

Our industry has clearly broadened itself so that there are so many more opportunities for these visual decorators, illustrators and photoshop artists to make a go of things on their own terms. But being a bit of an old traditional graphic purist, I too get sick of seeing certain visual styles and trends become so popular with the mainstream.. It's hard not to point the fingers sometimes at those who are seen as leading the pack and becoming the 'poster child' for these attitudes...

    • Well you know, inevitably a man in any profession at some point ceases being inspired and runs out of inspirationKhurram

these threads always have one or two negative comments and hundreds of people talking about "haters"

what the fuck are you all taking about?

  • janne760

Fuck Lorem Ipsum. Next time I will use this thread as a content filler.
    Awesome!

has been.. living off his old fame when he made stuff in Flash.. not sure how anyone can take him seriously anymore.. he hasn't produced commercial work in years.. there's a gazillion people who can do stuff he does..

But then again, most of the web stuff today and so called "design" is shit anyways thanks to "amazing" HTML5 that makes every site look the same and overblown sliders and scrollers and so on and is breeding ground for hack JS script kiddies to call themselves "developers". The whole industry has become a joke.

Khurram it was tool not korn... but Adam Jones taught me something very important that day... that I need to love the work just as much as the client did... that if I was making work for them and not for me... something would be lost.

I respect your thoughts and opinions and I don't mind the screensaver reference... good screensavers are hard to make. screensavers aren't born out of nothing. Talented people make them.

I've done screensavers... so has Michael Place. but because there are a lot of bad screensavers doesn't make screensavers as a whole a bad word.

    word.

The last thing I'll say and to try and encapsulate all the rubbish I've posted so far in this thread is this – we all should [<italics] act responsibly when we're the ones creating 'stuff' for public consumption. It's easy to get caught up in what makes us happy, but this whole art/design/communications thing should be a bit more than just that. There's a lot of people looking at what we produce, there's a lot of opportunity there to be taken..
