I do like the hd video on the canon, but I currently have an older film pentax with about 3 lenses that would fit on the k20d. My work uses mostly Canon, so I could use it for work projects. The Nikon D5000 looks pretty nice too.

careful if you want to use this for movies. I understand that ii is completely manual focus.

And go with canon by the way. Longer shelf life as you get more into photography.

okay, if you are a newcomer in dslr world...I would say that a Canon 1000D or 500D or is fine. Nikon 40d - 40dx - 60d...good too. I wouldnt go with Pentax.
Olympus got also good dslr.
E series is good with filters incorporated into the firmware.
If you got loads of cash of course you can go with the new Nikon 5000D, but no need, i suppose if u r just starting.

seems like nobody likes pentax? the in-camera image stabalizer and the weatherproofing both seem like pretty nice features

I love my Nikon D90, recommended!

I have bought Nikon D40. Got it from Amazon - http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obiā¦
This is my first DSLR and IMHO - good choice for me. I don't see a reason why should I overpay for higher models when I want to make first steps in photography.

Got a Nikon D80, love it. Looking for an upgrade to something with HD video, though (5D MkII is the only one, I'll hold off for a bit to see what Nikon comes out with)

canon - much better reputation and they have a real pro line compared to pentax.
having said that if took a file from either camera they would nearly identical.

do you have friends that shoot either you could trade lenses with in the future? I would choose canon, but no one can make that decision by yourself.
good luck
